Wild theory though, if skintone really is the only distinction between them - and unless they've specifically made new dark-oriented and pale-oriented palettes for them - why not have them programmed as one clan, and use the second clan for something else entirely... like Hrothgar?

Then again, they might just have more subtle distinctions and the Dramaturge isn't going to hold up his explanation to outline every detail. If nothing else, I hope that's the case at least.
They'd have to do something otherwise yeah, it's going to be boring - but then again if they're going the gender locked route then it's already going to be a race that doesn't have two distinct sub-races as well as lacking their male counterparts.

Part of me wishes that Hrothgar is the subrace to Viera that simply doesn't live in the wood and thus has the smaller ears and mane-like hair, perhaps lives in mountain/snow climate - like an Arctic hare. Arctic hares are much smaller than normal hares having smaller limbs and smaller ears than their counterparts. Also of course not forgetting that 'Viera' means 'of the wood'. Seems highly unlikely, however; unless people can't tell the difference between a 'cat' and a 'rabbit' in descriptions.
