FFXI's genderlocks were infuriating. Before even installing that game I had seen a picture of a male Mithra that's actually in the game and thought, this is cool, and then when I opened it up it turned out that only females were playable. I ended up having to play a boring-looking hume and I stopped playing after I had gotten one job to 50 and finished the Shadowlord mission. You're right in that it's not the same as a free to play kmmo, this is worse because for here I'd actually have to pay for genderlocks.
