Gender locked race?

I am super excited for the last story quests in March. I hope it reveals what's happening to all the scions and leaves a huge cliffhanger as we go to meet them. I'm not as excited about the war aspect of it as I am with the ever-looming fantasy of whatever is happening with the Scions.

Well, we know Lahabread is toast. Elidibus has stolen Zenos' corpse. Emet is different, if they're taking lore from FF12 then Emet is known as the 'Angel of Truth' a 'Scion' of light; that doesn't sound like Solus. That sounds more like us, or there's another Ascian who is more 'Good' than Elidibus' 'Neutral'.

That doesn't really mean anything since all the Ascian overlords are named after a Scion of Light in FFXII (sans Elidibus, after the host of Zodiark in Tactics, but his status as emissary makes him different from the overlords). Nabriales the Majestic, Igeyorhm the Martyr, Lahabrea the Abyssal Celebrant. In a very roundabout way, their titles as Scions of Light fit them (Nabriales' egotism, Igeyorhm's death in the very same patch we the WoL meet her), so they could be going the Irony route with Emet-Selch by making the "Angel of Truth" actually be in charge of all the lies surrounding the Garlean Empire... or since the second he showed up in game was to reveal the truth behind those lies...

All the genderlocked games I can think of are whale pandering that get most of their money from selling outfits on the cash shop (cant support a sub) to dress up female characters and don't give male characters even half of the customization options. Or you play preset hero characters and customization doesn't matter as much.

I just don't want FFXIV to get the same kind of criticisms as those flash in the pan kmmos.

I mean, FFXI was the first I played and as far as I know it still has some genderlocks? I don't think having an option for each sex, just being different races, is the same as what you're describing. Like it's the same amount of customizations on each side, just a different look for each. Any criticisms saying it's the same as a free to play kmmo would be over the top. I wouldn't be too worried about that if that's your only concern with the lock.

Honestly, what worries me the most whenever gender locking is brought up in any media is how much attention females will likely get regarding customization whereas males are an afterthought, if not outright neglected (I'm looking at you, Pokemon).

Before even installing that game I had seen a picture of a male Mithra that's actually in the game and thought, this is cool, and then when I opened it up it turned out that only females were playable. I ended up having to play a boring-looking hume and I stopped playing after I had gotten one job to 50 and finished the Shadowlord mission. I'd much rather just have male viera, but I have a feeling we're going to be stuck with female Veira and male Hrothgar, whatever those turn out to be. I don't have any faith that SE is going to be delivering two new races with both genders in one expansion, though it would be cool if they pulled that off before quiting on adding new races in the future.

Well, you wouldn't have to pay for them. Like you have mentioned previously, you would just unsub if it happens and then everyone would move on with their lives like everyone who played ffxi did. I don't remember it ever being an issue for the playerbase while I was playing that game. It was just how the game was. Granted, I didn't play for the whole lifespan so maybe it exploded later on if anyone remembers any articles or anything about it. My point was more that no one would compare this game to a kmmo because of the quality of the game.

Can you explain what makes you want male Viera? Is it the name? The lore behind them? Because that's all we have so far compared to Hrothgar. I would agree that Hrothgar is a weird race name.

Final Fantasy XII was the first FF game I bought with my own money as a kid and ever since HW’s concept artwork was released I’ve wanted to see and play as a male Viera. imo, Hrothgar can be cool but Hrothgar will never be as cool as finally getting a male Viera in a Final Fantasy game.
