I first played six months after launch in the US, and stopped exactly 75 hours of play time later.

I'm going to have to take exception to your use of the word irrational.

There is nothing irrational about my disgust with Final Fantasy XI. It is based solely upon playing and analyzing the game and its content divorced from the fact that it is is a numbered Final Fantasy title. The reason why it wasn't a controversial title is because there was nothing controversial about it. It was an awful game. You either tolerated that awfulness because you wanted the Final Fantasy experience in an MMO, or you turned around and ran for the hills as fast as you could.

You can tell me all you want about how much "better" things are nowadays with all the many changes that have been made, but that is not a defense of what the game was. That's an indictment of it.

Don't mistake your own personal nostalgia for a quality experience. That isn't how you review things.
