To those asking for greater character creation over Viera are under the mistaken belief that both of those are comparable to the one another. They are not by any stretch of the imagination. Greater character creation has aspects of difficulty in greater data attributed to each character in the player space, the servers ability of those said servers to move that character data from instance to another, and many many other issues i as a non programmer/ game creator cannot begin to plan for.
Conversely the addition of Viera has the aspect of being able to assign all the values that make up whatever Viera will eventually look like in their final form. The same value that each of our characters already have atm.
Lets say each and every character has a value of 10, all the aspects that make your character add up to 10. This is how the program see us and the amount of data that need be compiled to function in the game world. ANY change to that value requires the entire game world to be restructured because now the value 10.0001.
Sliders, horns options, facial hair, scale coloring, anything else added to character creation would simple break the game, because the engine simply wasn't designed to give us those options. Make no mistake this is a problem. What the game needs is a restructuring on the level of 1.0 to 2.0. Far to much of the source code is being hindered by the the far to limiting frame work 1.0 set upon the growth of this game.
I want to be wrong here but as it stands, a few more jobs and races are the best they can offer until either the game dies or they take on the monumental task of remaking Hydalen once more.
I wasn't around for OG FFXIV. So what happens if Square Enix decides to upgrade to a new engine again? Do we get news of it well in advance? And what would carry over to the new version of FFXIV? Would I lose my house? To those asking for greater character creation over Viera are under the mistaken belief that both of those are comparable to the one another. 1.0 shut down in November of 2012 from what I understand, and 2.0 came out in August of 2013. However that short period of time didn't allow them to create a new engine so much as frankenstein the old one into a mess of spaghetti code that's still causing problems to this day. If they were to develop a completely new engine, even just porting all the assets, it would likely take a lot longer than nearly a year to fix everything properly. You likely would also lose your house in the transfer and character if they went by what happened between 1.0-2.0.
I cant really say tbh. When it was announced that the game would be basically recreated there was alot of assurances that our character data would be copied over to the servers. However at that time housing was not made and truth be told even linkshells were deleted as they were not deemed important enough to bring over. We were given a fantasia so as to recreate our characters due to the "slight" (there are still many people who want their butts back) changes made to character models.
This is a myth that simply is not true - ARR uses a custom-made engine based on elements of the engine used in FFXV (Luminous Engine), it's not simply a 'reuse' of Crystal Tools (1.0's engine). Shortcomings and oversights in ARR are because of time constraints that led to SE only concentrating on designing a base game with it's core elements working better than what 1.0 did for ARR's launch, with 'fluff' like glamour set aside for future implementation at a much later date. Unfortunately, because of this ARR was developed somewhat as a 'closed system', with it's core elements being rather difficult to adapt for new functions (the issues with glamour are an example).1.0 shut down in November of 2012 from what I understand, and 2.0 came out in August of 2013. Really, they are unlikely to ever do what they did with replacing 1.0 with ARR again, rather than 'upgrade' ARR with a new more advanced engine it would just be more feasible and likely for them to instead devote resources to developing a whole new game, as this was actually the whole circumstances for FFXIV 1.0's development in the first place - they felt instead of updating FFXI's aging PS2 engine and graphics the money and resources for such a project would be better spent on desiging a brand new FF MMO.
Of course the end result was alas not what they had planned or expected, but the hubris of 1.0 does not mean SE won't do the same with FFXIV too - after all there are rumours that they are already working on a new FF MMO, but that is another story.

You're welcome! I'm sorry if I came across as harsh there - in hindsight my post was a little testy, so I'm really sorry about that!
Re the ARR engine: this is my citation for ARR's engine origins.
