As I see it those earrings are part of a collection. People collect everything in real life and they collect stuff here in game. Mounts, Minions, Titles, Triple Triad Cards, Glamour Items... all kinds of stuff.

And just like in the real world people have a special hang to the rare and hard to get things. They are the highlights of every collection. The more rare the better. Bonus points if it was not only rare, but also hard to get in the first place. 50 years old Limited Edition first print with wrong colors in original package? Awesome!

But now suddenly a container with thousands of these things was discovered and the highlight of your collection becomes only a piece of plastic junk.

You still remember the awesome feeling to get the hands on your rare item the first time, the joy of looking at it and just the knowledge that it was there, even when you would never got it out of the safe. But that's all gone now.

This event doesn't take away the item from the 1.0 players, and it doesn't take away the memorys. But it will take away from the collectors. Sure, collectors who didn't played 1.0 can add a new item to their collection - but it will never have the same place in their collection as it had in the collections of the 1.0 players.
