I have said that a particular position espoused by some 1.0 players amounts to that. If you feel that's disrespectful or feel disrespected by that, so be it. It's not my problem.

I still don't understand why they chose the earrings of all things. If they were going to do this then they had plenty of items to choose from.
The Dalamud Horn would have been a great fit since the whole event is about retelling 1.0's story.
Instead they went with the one item you got from the hardest raid the game had at the time, which was even promised to remain exclusive. They didn't just go back on their word, they ran it over a couple of times for good measure.
I understand the Manderville earrings though. It's not like we have any quests related to its namesake or anything.
No, it's an honest opinion regarding the impact of certain attitudes people have on the game experience.
Edit: Actually, I really shouldn't even be responding to any of this. It's just helping you guys derail the thread. If you have personal issues with me or how I post, that's fine. I'm not addressing them anymore though.

Hoooooooooooooo boy, this thread would have twice the pages if it was dalamud horn, they would upset a lot more people than with these earrings.I still don't understand why they chose the earrings of all things. If they were going to do this then they had plenty of items to choose from.

Not saying it's right, just they could have least chosen something less taxing to get.
I wonder if they actually just chose the earrings because less people had them so the devs thought there wouldn't be much fuss about it.
We are FFXIV players here can we not simply agree to disagree? Peace and love?
Okay, back to topic ^^/
As I see it those earrings are part of a collection. People collect everything in real life and they collect stuff here in game. Mounts, Minions, Titles, Triple Triad Cards, Glamour Items... all kinds of stuff.
And just like in the real world people have a special hang to the rare and hard to get things. They are the highlights of every collection. The more rare the better. Bonus points if it was not only rare, but also hard to get in the first place. 50 years old Limited Edition first print with wrong colors in original package? Awesome!
But now suddenly a container with thousands of these things was discovered and the highlight of your collection becomes only a piece of plastic junk.
You still remember the awesome feeling to get the hands on your rare item the first time, the joy of looking at it and just the knowledge that it was there, even when you would never got it out of the safe. But that's all gone now.
This event doesn't take away the item from the 1.0 players, and it doesn't take away the memorys. But it will take away from the collectors. Sure, collectors who didn't played 1.0 can add a new item to their collection - but it will never have the same place in their collection as it had in the collections of the 1.0 players.
If other players also having the same item as you reduces it to a piece of plastic junk then it couldn't have been that special to begin with.
