The reason humans seek it is because all these things associated with prestige generally provide dopamine hits and feel good which then drives people to seek more and more.

If you enjoy something it's just a bonus. But the driving reason to do something is for those hits and any prestigious elements they offer. You might for example love cooking and thoroughly enjoy it. That's great. but there's nothing better than having the people you just cooked for tell you the food was absolutely amazing. That little recognition of your efforts is a huge buzz.

It's also why it can absolutely destroy you if you put your heart and soul into making an amazing meal and don't even get so much as a thank you for it.

Or people with work. The only reason most people go to work each day is because of the pay cheque at the end of the month... if you look at various career studies some job sites do apparently less than 17% of people actually enjoy there jobs. I dunno if that just British or a global average though just something I read on reed.
I guess my views differ from the minority, I do not much of anything for acknowledgement or accolades from others. Sure it is a bonus, but for me personally I put forth the effort because it is something I want to do. When it comes to careers I do understand wanting to retain the value of your work, since said value has a direct correlation to lively hood. I guess I just have a hard time putting them on the same level and thus I hold very little prestigious value to the rewards I gain, and place the value on the experience itself and what the item represents in that sense. Though since I place no value outside of my own personal gain the impact of others having or even belittling my achievement is zero since my reasoning for doing something is based around my own desire to do so.

Either way overall thanks for the all the responses everyone who answered my question. I will not pretend to understand your position, but I do respect it.

Hey but is ok for Lagancy to bitch even tho nothing 1.0 is exclusive, only exclusives would be "Lagancy"
To be fair the number of "exclusive" vanity items released during the span of 2.0/3.0/4.0, individually, rival the number of exclusive vanity items released during the span of 1.0. The difference is what those exclusives are: For 2.0, most everything were codes included with physical items purchased from the SE store. For 3.0 and 4.0, it's a bit of that (with 4.0 also making them even more exclusive because they're single-character item codes now) and a bit of Ranked PvP.

Various people have voiced complaints about those items being exclusive too, especially the Ranked PvP stuff and the emote codes tied to the super expensive physical statues.

I think this varies wildly person to person.

Like for me, there's a time:value:f***sgiven ratio that hardly ever works out with online gaming. I do all kinds of immensely stupid things in offline single-player games, largely without reward (implied or otherwise), because I find them fun and I can approach them at my leisure. Metal Gear Solid 2 is a great example - I've spent dozens of hours in the tanker/tutorial mission just having fun messing with the guards and goofing about. But when we start getting into online group content, the time and f***sgiven numbers change significantly and I lose all interest.

In XIV in particular, so much so that I've made nearly no effort to raid since Midas. I simply dislike being beholden to the whims and failings of 7 other people, and I can't use my friend group to raid because 1) the disparity in skill is obscene and 2) I'm not willing to replace people. If the rewards were super appealing and I knew they wouldn't just be handed out in ~2 years, perhaps my stance would change. But it doesn't, so I don't.

For another layer, I don't get the appeal of watching other people play video games unless they're sitting in the same room as me. I just don't get it. And I certainly don't get why someone would pay money to watch them play the games. But they do.

And a layer beyond that, the concept of professional gaming/eSports blows my mind in a decidedly bad way. Like first why you would spend so many hours on a daily basis doing repetitive things to hone your skill and presumably turn your passion into your job. And second, again why people pay money to see/participate in things like that (outside of monetary incentives).

I don't think poorly of the people that enjoy any of that, and I don't judge them unless it seems really unhealthy (see: horrible netcafe fatality stories), but... yeah. I don't get it.

Indeed, and that's what I mean. Even a large portion of this thread was spent by people trying to argue both sides of his comments about 1.0/Legacy exclusivity, and those comments left far less open to debate than the Ultimate quote.

I would like to point out that Sigmascape had been out for a couple months at that point, though. Whether they were doing it for the challenge, prestige or the glamour weapons, those people were (are?) doing outdated content.

That said, I fully expect it to be something running it unsync will make easier, not cheeseable. People still wipe on Seph Ex after all, that's how well that one aged ♥
Tethers too hard, pls nerf. We've been able to duo Seph EX with tanks for a while now though, to be fair. It's just a matter of the number of tethers not adjusting if you have fewer than 8 people, but once HP is high enough you'll still live through most of it.

It'll be the same for Ultimate. It's definitely not going to be the case of "it's 5.0 and I have my free i470 AF gear, time to steamroll Ultimate Bahamut!", but when we're casually dealing 12k DPS and our healers are sitting at 80,000+ HP pre-Echo it's just a matter of time.

    ---

Found another quote from Yoshida that basically mirrors a sentiment I posted before:
Specifically in the case of Ultimate you'd have been exchanging all Materia melds (VIT particularly) for +5 ilvls, which would most likely yield a net loss and become harder pre-Anemos gear, but yeah. Same general idea of "it's harder than I like so I'll wait until it's easy to try" though.

I don't remember ARR being a broken mess that had to rebuilt from the ground up. Then again, I started in 2.1

Since when does something need to be a broken mess to be Legacy? As you can be rewarded for horrible game you can also be rewarded for a good game.

While not needing to be rebuilt from the ground up, it wasn't perfect on release. WAR was unwanted. Had little to no tanking capabilities and Holmgang was literally useless (did not keep WAR's alive). Turn 5 was broken (the instance was closed off for a bit). Server latency was very bad, since it was a 3 second tick or something (making AoE's difficult to dodge. There was a thread on this that got over 100 pages regarding the issue, since the lag made it difficult to dodge Titans' and ADS' AoE's). PS3 players could not use Focus Target (until 2.1, I think). DRG's had extremely bad magic defence, so the loldrg meme found its new home in FFXIV. Probably more, but those are the few I specifically remember.

If you thought about it you probably would more than you realise. If you have kids you probably want to be regarded as a good parent and do the very best for them if you have a partner you want to to be the one that has there affection... If you have friends you probably want to be seen as a good or important friend or feel valuable or important to the people in your life.

That's not to say self esteem isn't important because you can get that same prestige from self set goals but it's human nature to seek it from others in many forms.
