Would PvP destroy the camaraderie of FFXIV

Everyone says that one of the best features of FFXI is that it created an atmosphere of friendship and helpfulness. All the players were on the same side. It was you and everyone else vs. the mobs.

While there are lots of benefits to PvP (the adrenaline rush of fighting a sentient being rather than Ai), one of the recurring issues people have with PvP is that it would destroy this sense of camaraderie between players. Obviously nobody can predict what would happen if PvP was implemented, but I for one feel that the game could still foster this atmosphere of friendship and still have PvP at the same time.

    Examples:

-Especially in the case of open world PvP, linkshells and parties become more closely knitted communities since there is greater protection in numbers.

-In Ultima Online, for example, there was no shortage of helpful players despite there being PvP. In fact it was mainly "red players (Player Killers)" who were shunned from society. It was actually very difficult to survive as a Pker in Ultima Online; you couldnt enter friendly towns without being attacked by the guards and other players . So a system like this helped sustain social balance, but there was still a lingering danger which players were collectively opposed to: a common enemy.

I think there are many ways to maintain social balance while implementing PvP. PvP adds another element of danger/threat which keeps the game interesting, but it doesn't necessarily have to conflict with the elements that make a game like FFXIV so good.

It would be interesting to have an experimental server to see how the implementation of PvP would pan out.

Have you read these forums? What camaraderie?

    :P

But (more) seriously. It depends on how they implement it and how mature the gamers are. I can play competitive sports against my friends and it forges comaraderie between us. I wish people saw PVP as an alternative to predictable AI (which is enjoyable most of the time) instead of some dark side of the MMO world that they have to choose to be a part of OR not.

Didn't Yoshi state that there will not be any PVP-PK alike? And what element of danger? Douchebag666 Pking you out of the blue to calm his anger because his mom gave him his 5k calories samish 2 minutes later than usual?

    Give it a break.

First off, you have to let us know what kind of PvP you're talking about. Though I think you're talking about open PvP, which I think they outright said wouldn't happen, there's also coliseum like features to consider.

On the off chance that you're talking about the organized PvP, not everyone engages in PvP. I can see it encouraging competitive spirit, something FFXIV seems to lack, but the only thing that can destroy the spirit of togetherness and friendship is trolls and bullies. Which are gonna be there with/without PvP.

So. No, I don't think it would. If ever you got the idea that it did, then you were wrongly associating one particular jerk/group of jerks with a particular game mode.

Open PvP would just be the ultimate troll tool, so yeah, I don't think they're implementing it.

There wont be any open world PVP. Its already been officially addressed.
11 had Ballista, it was pretty lame and it didn't affect the overall community at all.

Lineage 2 was a terrible experience I'll just say that now.

I would be against open PvP, if only because I myself have been on the receiving end of a PK many times on a newbie character. :/ However, I am for a coliseum-style arena where folks can go one-on-one or team-against-team. Especially if they could turn it into a fun player driven event where others could watch. :> Kind of like the arena in the .hack//GU games.

Ill bet it would have been a lot better for folks like you if they gave the option to go to a care-bear server vs. a hard core open world PvP. Ive played on hard core servers...and ya it sux, but its also a rush!
But its also not something that everyone enjoys.

    Pretty much this.

Also, I notice this game doesn't have any "rogues" so.... PKing should'nt be an issue ^.^

As long as the PvP is not open-world free for all it should be fine. People can head to the established area, fight to their hearts content and then come back to the PvE stuff (everything else).
