You realize that it's rules that they create and they can change it at any time? We'll see more information with that new housing site they was talking about.

Of course, but how exactly could they possibly compensate? The plot price is easy, but the time/effort/money spent on decorating isn't possible to determine and would vary per person (some people craft themselves, others buy from marketboard, etc.) The PR backlash they'd risk, it's not worth it. Considerably easier to just leave be.

They're probably going to compensate them with the price of the house and plot, plus imho a decent % more to compensate for furnishings and options that are destroyed or can't be reclaimed. It's just not fair for anyone to own more than 1 person and 1 FC house in a game where there's 72k plots for 300k accounts.Of course, but how exactly could they possibly compensate? They'll likely let every multiple house owner pick which house(s) they will keep.
If they don't, the change was not actually a change.
EDIT: It would be really cool if they made all furnishings that become soulbound when placed unsoulbound when houses are relinquished like this, so you could potentially turn some profit on top of it. Though it shouldn't apply to things that are soulbound the moment they are acquired.

I think your math is a bit wrong there.
30 plots per wards, 2 subdivisions, 18 wards, 4 housing areas, 66 servers.
That's 285,120
4.2 will be adding 95,040 houses.

I miscounted the # of servers, though it still remains that there are only 4,320 plots per server. On places like Greg or Balmung competition will still be fierce. I'm in favor of letting those who own multiple houses pick 1 personal and 1 FC if they own an FC and the rest are force relinquished with compensation of Gil equal to the value of the house and plot, +25% or so to compensate for unrecoverable furnishings. Maybe un-bind the 'bind when placed' items so they can sell them.

There is a problem with that. How do you compensate for housing items bought in the cash shop? That could get very sticky if SE tried anything without an option to refund the player's money. Even then with how poor the cash shop is with billing and such I still see a real mess.
How is an alt a 2nd class character? And why is my alt that I leveled and geared and worked my butt off for worth less than any other character?
They wouldn't be immune to the rule. It would apply to them as well since the rule is about purchasing houses, and they won't be able to purchase anymore that what they already own.Anyone grandfathered in to be immune to the rules that are being implemented is by default some kind of 'super user'. They own multiple houses in a game where the rules now say you can't do that, and noone else will *ever* be able to be like them ever no matter what circumstances. Sounds like a special player to me.
You and I paid a pound/euro/dollar extra not the price of a full character. I too have the option of 8 characters and currently use 4 of them. Yet I only have a house on my main as I can't personally justify locking people out of houses, just so I can enter a house every so often on my alts. So no you shouldn't be able to lock out 14 other players from getting a house just because you pay an extra pound.
Realistically, the PR would likely be just as bad if they just left it be.Of course, but how exactly could they possibly compensate? The plot price is easy, but the time/effort/money spent on decorating isn't possible to determine and would vary per person (some people craft themselves, others buy from marketboard, etc.) The PR backlash they'd risk, it's not worth it. They make the change and grandfather people in but then once all the plots sell out, the complaints start up again about those who got grandfathered in particularly because at this point those people have a benefit that no one else can replicate.
OR
They make the change and don't grandfather people in, you have those people get the pick of their current houses. They feel bad but with the limitations noted, at a minimum for every individual impacted, four people are happier cause their fc now has a house and those are four unique accounts per world. For those that have like 16 houses, that's potentially 56 people.
It's literally a group being unhappy and a larger group being happy given the combination of new and freed up plots. Maybe the smaller group is more vocal, but it's not unrealistic to expect that the good pr from the larger group will overwhelm the negative from the smaller.
