Useless for the people that don't care about the story, they aren't reading it. My understanding is they want people to pay attention to it, right? And from what I've seen from other people arguing with the same point as yours (which I'm assuming here cause you can mean something completely different.) is that the story becomes useless if it's optional. But wouldn't it be useless now for the people that are already skipping it?

The huge number of fetch quests is the main problem. Those fetch quests won't make players better in dungeons. If you're worried people will access dungeons without doing prior dungeons, then just gate access to new content with content that will give players the knowledge to do new content well, don't gate access to new content behind hundreds of fetch quests that won't do anything but numb most peoples' brains.

I am also for putting in new rewards for completing main story quests, such as special minions, furniture, cosmetics, emotes, etc., so that people have new incentives to do them to replace the current incentive of access to gated content.

You don't say? no way! because once someone is done with the story, they just log off, never to be seen again untill the story is updated. .... You serious?

If the story is as underappreciated as you guys say (and I'm not arguing that point, I know plenty people who think the MSQ's cutscenes are tedious and don't watch them), then what will happen if we make MSQ optional? People won't play it.

    Why is that bad?

Because like 90% of casual content in the game is unlocked through the MSQ. So now we have new players NOT unlocking these instances, and as older players attrition or lapse sub in between patches, what do the queues look like for 90% of content? It now takes a prohibitive amount of time to get a group. So now even people INTERESTED in the MSQ don't play it because it's to hard to actually get into content. Roulettes (primary source of endgame currency and gear) don't get run because level 50 and 60 content is dead.

Are people going to continue playing for the other 10% of casual content, like PotD? No. It's not a healthy gaming environment. Most of the casual content should be "required" in some way to unlock in order to keep a critical mass of players in the queues and keep content alive.

Why do people who don't care about the story want to play the game? I'm assuming it's for the gameplay right? If you're new, you have years worth of development put into the gameplay that you can enjoy in 2.X and 3.X. Skip the story all you want, but right now the people who do that get 1 - 2 weeks of 2.X content they can enjoy before they reach Heavensward. When 4.0 hits they will have 2 - 3 weeks of content they can enjoy before hitting 4.0.

It's sad that this has been upvoted so much. Is this really the FFXIV community, that only wants a certain "type" of person playing their game and everyone else can fart right off? A community that wants a restrictive and arbitrary and virtually unheard-of in the MMO world design decision to remain in place simply to SPITE someone else?

How petty. I'm starting to feel like you guys can keep your precious, pristine, unsullied "community".

    Stop right there!

The non-max level roulettes are there to help new people actually get a group to clear the dungeon they need to clear for the MSQ and other quests (such as the old relic). They reward tomes to give players who no longer need them an incentive to help out - their primary purpose is not to give out tokens. That aside: 50s roulette already is entirely optional to unlock - you only need Snowcloak and Keeper of the Lake for the MSQ. Are 50s dungeons dead as a result?

Besides, unlocking a dungeon could be as simple as discovering it. If you find the entrance, you can enter - having an NPC in front of nearly every dungeon isn't particularly immersive anyway - there's not a single dungeon you could just walk into alone! Makes you feel everything was under control long before you came.
