If the story is as underappreciated as you guys say (and I'm not arguing that point, I know plenty people who think the MSQ's cutscenes are tedious and don't watch them), then what will happen if we make MSQ optional? People won't play it.

    Why is that bad?

Because like 90% of casual content in the game is unlocked through the MSQ. So now we have new players NOT unlocking these instances, and as older players attrition or lapse sub in between patches, what do the queues look like for 90% of content? It now takes a prohibitive amount of time to get a group. So now even people INTERESTED in the MSQ don't play it because it's to hard to actually get into content. Roulettes (primary source of endgame currency and gear) don't get run because level 50 and 60 content is dead.

Are people going to continue playing for the other 10% of casual content, like PotD? No. It's not a healthy gaming environment. Most of the casual content should be "required" in some way to unlock in order to keep a critical mass of players in the queues and keep content alive.

    Stop right there!

The non-max level roulettes are there to help new people actually get a group to clear the dungeon they need to clear for the MSQ and other quests (such as the old relic). They reward tomes to give players who no longer need them an incentive to help out - their primary purpose is not to give out tokens. That aside: 50s roulette already is entirely optional to unlock - you only need Snowcloak and Keeper of the Lake for the MSQ. Are 50s dungeons dead as a result?

Besides, unlocking a dungeon could be as simple as discovering it. If you find the entrance, you can enter - having an NPC in front of nearly every dungeon isn't particularly immersive anyway - there's not a single dungeon you could just walk into alone! Makes you feel everything was under control long before you came.

The level 50 content is alive because of the roulette, the roulette is unlocked when people have other people from roulette help them clear it the first time.

If you remove the MSQ requirement for most dungeons and they never get unlocked, critical mass isn't maintained and the content dies.

Now you suggest an alternative unlock quest, that's all well and good, fine. However 1) that requires development and people were opposed to condensing the MSQ because that requires development but at this point it's really the same and 2) some contents have situational context only. Snowcloak? No reason to go besides the Iceheart plot arc. Nobody would encourage just adventurers going to explore those caves otherwise. It's hardly the only one. What about MSQ based trials, like the Steps of Faith. Oh, you wanna cross this bridge, well there's a Dragon. LOL wat? Doesn't make any sense

You're wrong. If all gating behind main story quests was removed, duty roulette would remain the same. People will still click the buttons to enter duty roulette to get their end game currency, get queued in with other people looking to get end game currency, and earn end game currency at the same rate. All it takes is 1 tank, 1 healer, and 2 DPS clicking those buttons, or however many players are required for an instance.

And if main story quests was removed, it does not mean in any way that the "first timer" bonus would have to be removed. First timers themselves would probably want to run dungeons for the first time in order to grab the bonus tokens, or they would be forced to by the duty roulette system if they have access to those dungeons and meet the gear level requirement.

Anyway, don't like this thread, goodbye. Too much poor analyses by people who for some reason think everyone should be forced to do fetch quests.

I'm not saying people who have it unlocked wouldn't run it.

I'm saying that far less NEW PLAYERS would unlock the content. And we all know that old players don't stick around forever, or they let their sub lapse between patches. When there aren't enough people who have to content/roulettes unlocked for new people interested in the content to run it to actually get in, it dies because people aren't going to wait around.
