In FFXI and XIV, people have literally bought gear from an NPC, and put it on the market for twice the price. And it sold !
I was doing that during Betas and when the game was still fresh. I made hundred of thousand with only that.
Then did the same when housing was released. I remember buying 5 stables ( Which are worth 120k each ) and sold them 500k gil each.
