lol that's a perfect analogy Tigercub. Most the ppl that disagree with your comparison are likely the ones that lead a "charmed" life (in and out of game, no doubt).

In the long run everyone has a fair shot. Just because the guy in your example has temporary good luck doesn't mean he's gonna have the same luck down the road. If you don't know how to play the game he will then lose his money as fast as he obtained it.

"Luck" plays little part in this. It's a term used by those who lack the skill and dedication. Someone with worse luck than him can still easily get ahead if he knows wtf he is doing.

if I earn my gil legitimatly, why not? everyone has equal chance to get gil in this game. Do you call this game unfair when someone get dungeon drop at their first time, while you still didnt get it on your 10th attempt?

What's with asian games and wanting to add failure rates on +ing items? Not exactly fun to have someone stronger than you just because he got lucky on his attachments.

got lucky?? dedicated crafter that I know in other MMO dont rely on "luck", they prepare gears to be upgraded, they know some will fail and some will success. They just KEEP TRYING.

I agree with the post further up, if they have to include a failure rate (god knows why, it's such an ancient MMO flaw to disregard time investment in things but whatever) I'd prefer it where lower grade materia are less of a risk to put in, so that you might be able to at least push a little further, and those who want to really risk it all have that option too.

As people already said, there's got to be risks associated with getting the best of the best possible gear/item/weapons. If there weren't any risks, then we'll just have people who bought gil from RMT running around in stuff that the didn't "earn" themselves. SE is doing you a favor by not making you run something over and over and over again for a 0.1% chance at some "legendary" item with all the ridiculous guild drama attached (see: WoW) You actually still come out ahead because you'll be able to get very powerful gear in a short amount of time (rather than measured in months, this could be measured in weeks)
It isnt dumb. We destroy equipment already to turn it into materia. Failing to put a 2nd+ materia on a gear and losing both gear and materia means you lost 3 materia: the materia you tried to attack, the materia in the gear, and the gear that could have been turned into materia. It isnt ez mode to not have gear be destroyed simply because we already are destroying it by turning it into materia in the first place. The markets will not flood with gear if gear either destruction on failure is removed, its all going into materia creation. There are already risks without the gear destruction from failed materia attatchment.

Losing all materia in the gear on failure would be better than loosing the gear and all materia.

Failure rate does not "disregard" time investment. You put in the time, you are rewarded for it. In the long run this will always be the case.

I don't know if any of you played AION, but let me tell you a little about the slotting system in that game, which the Materia system is based on. You have a piece of equipment with 4 slots. You go out and quest/hunt for maybe 2 days and then vendor your items and sell rare items on the auction house. You then have a million units of currency, which you spend on Materia gems. You then slots these items into your piece of gear, losing all your gems in the process due to the fail rate. Congratulations, all of your wealth from the last 2 days is gone, and your gear is worse off than when you started.

This is what's coming to FFXIV, and I would humbly request that we remove failure rates from the system and instead implement a bonus for those hardcore enough to grind the wealth and gems needed for what, 15-20 slot attempts?

Let a piece of equipment contain a limited amount of surplus attempts (20?) that is reset by purging the gear. Further materia slot attempts have a chance at boosting the stats of the piece of gear, plain and simple.

Or maybe just a casino where you can pay the 15 million gil and have your materia slotted all at once to save you the time.

Either way I'm sure there will be some good ideas to prevent casual players from having to run around with only 1 materia slot filled because they already learned once that you don't even try to slot the 2nd materia. My memories of the Materia system from FFVII are so pleasant, I don't want this frustrating system to become a part of FFXIV and drag the name down.

Dear Yoshi ... were is my unlike button.... >_>
