Please change the planned Materia attachment fail rate to a bonus system

    From: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/277

"Players can never fail to attach the first piece of materia. However, the success rate progressively decreases with each subsequent piece of materia. A failed attempt to attach materia will result in the loss of all items involved in the process, barring the key item."

I don't know if any of you played AION, but let me tell you a little about the slotting system in that game, which the Materia system is based on. You have a piece of equipment with 4 slots. You go out and quest/hunt for maybe 2 days and then vendor your items and sell rare items on the auction house. You then have a million units of currency, which you spend on Materia gems. You then slots these items into your piece of gear, losing all your gems in the process due to the fail rate. Congratulations, all of your wealth from the last 2 days is gone, and your gear is worse off than when you started.

This is what's coming to FFXIV, and I would humbly request that we remove failure rates from the system and instead implement a bonus for those hardcore enough to grind the wealth and gems needed for what, 15-20 slot attempts?

Let a piece of equipment contain a limited amount of surplus attempts (20?) that is reset by purging the gear. Further materia slot attempts have a chance at boosting the stats of the piece of gear, plain and simple.

Or maybe just a casino where you can pay the 15 million gil and have your materia slotted all at once to save you the time.

Either way I'm sure there will be some good ideas to prevent casual players from having to run around with only 1 materia slot filled because they already learned once that you don't even try to slot the 2nd materia. My memories of the Materia system from FFVII are so pleasant, I don't want this frustrating system to become a part of FFXIV and drag the name down.

Going to have people crying about no risk-reward again if this happened.

Eh, from my understanding of the posts in regards to the new materia system, it will be those with the time and money to invest in high risk that will be using it.

Sorry, but Joe Schmoe with a rank 25 & rank 14 shouldn't be worrying about the "forbidden" materia system.

However, FFFanboy682625 will have buttloads of gil, likely several 50's in both Battle & Craft classes, and will grind away at this system regardless to get the best MIN/MAX from their character.

The long and short of it is, this extreme system is here for crafter enjoyment & inclusion, and judging by your sig, you're not much of a crafter.

So I'm stating my position of "no" on this idea.

I like that before you try the "forbidden mateira craft" (the process of adding more then one piece to your gear) it will tell you the success rate of the attempt, so that way you can boost the success rate with food, and other conditions.

Since the game is being balanced for just one piece of materia then the this will break down to a risk vs reward, and those willing to put more on the line will get more out of it... That being said, seeing the % chance of succeeding will then put it to the player whether or not to take that risk in the first place.

All I can say is that since gear with materia can be traded, 5 slot materia gear is sure to be worth more then it's weight in gil. Before everyone get's all upset and we debate this again and again, we should see how the system works, then provide the feedback.

I'd agree with those who don't want the gear to break if the game was forcing you into having 5 slot mateira gear, but as it stands, it will be a 1 slot game, and for those who want to use the "forbidden mateira craft" can make that call and be rewarded or disappointed.

The problem with your interpretation of the materia system is that you essentially don't have to spend money to get them. You just use gear you either already had, got from drops/rewards, had crafted/crafted yourself, received as a gift, etc... and turn that into materia. Sure you can skip a lot of the steps simply by throwing money at them but the point is you're not forced to do it. Also if you don't want to take the risk, don't. Play it safe, the system rewards risk.

I like the current risk/reward that they are offering.

You pays your materia, you takes your chances, when trying to get the most badass weapons etc in the game...

In my opinion, the system is actually fine as it is envisioned. With it telling you the chance of success you are now taking an informed risk. That, I would suggest, makes all the difference. It is substantially better than the alternative where all you know is that you have a chance of success, and nothing more. Just tell me what the odds are and then I'll make an informed choice to, or not to, add the extra materia. As Delmontyb suggests (see: #7) you may even be able to improve your odds with food or w/e (and you'd know they improved at that because the chance of success would be visibly higher).

I don't ask for a cake walk, I only ask that the risks and rewards are explained so that I can make informed decisions.
