Maybe its not needed to handle all mechanics in easy content. But people that whant to do more than just faceroll stuff, should learn to handle mechanics the intended way in every content.
I think you misunderstood him. It's perfectly fine to judge if you can stand in one or two AoEs, if you evaluate the situation before. Like staying in the first AoEs of Thordan if you got an Crit-Adlo which was spreaded. The attack won't even destroy the shield, so why move?

Why do you think a BLM has Manaward, Manawall and Surecast?

It's all about evaluating. And I'm glad, if anyone is actually doing that, instead of sticking to a strict pattern all of the time.
Kill the adds @ first Boss ARF or dodge the AoEs while icy ground on the last? Yeah, if you didn't realize, that the line can just be intercepted by the healer and the add only explodes with 3k damage, while the AoEs on the last boss do something like 1-2k and you have to make a 5s slide (with almost no guarantee that you are not hit accidently anyway)? Screw it, better get 1 AoE pattern with a hit, than 3 AoE patterns I have to dodge. Do I eat now every AoE in every content, like "Screw baiting the eyes in Niddhog, I'll just stay in 1 or 2 of them."? Hell, no.

It's like someone who has double-weakness and no protect yet shouldn't stack on Akh Morn or any other "Four-Big-Arrows"-AoE, just because the markers tell him to do. He has to judge the situation and come to the conclusion: "No, i won't follow the mechanic here."
