Why is "It's something to do" apparently a valid defense?

I will use FFXI as a example since I played it and allot of others did. Pretty much every expansion you paid for added something new to the game like Campaign, dynamis, besieged etc.

Right, but, apart from Dynamis, those content had absolutely no useful reward for endgame.
Exactly like Fronlines, Gold Saucer, Lords Of Vermilion, Triple Triad.
