The main problem (as stated) is that they can roll on loot despite not contributing to the combat aspect... at all. It's not like other party members get a share of the materials you've gathered as a DoL.

Supposedly gatherers can dig up treasure chests that the party can loot on. You're just less likely to see one since you'll have more people fighting than gathering. Gatherers are contributing to adding loot as well. It's just a matter of whether you will actually get one or not.
