If they want to go there and gather the whole time they can create a preformed party of 8 gatherers rather than being useless and benefiting from the other 7 people actually working towards a common goal.

I made a list of suggestion in another thread, but bottom line:
1. Split into Diadem DW+M and Diadem Gathering, each with their own objectives. You choose which activities are more to your liking.
2. Keep the fluidity of changing into all jobs only for FC airship expedition.
3. Change the ability of looting items from chests, only if you have contributed to the fight to a certain degree. This can be done, Final Fantasy XI have done this with their Reive activity, they can copy that.
4. Revised the penalty, so if you leave anytime before your 90 minutes is up, you only get hit with 30 minutes penalty, same as if you stay for the full 90 minutes duration.
To be fair, the other person really has no obligation to help out. If they entered with the sole purpose of gathering, then I don't see why they can't just do that. It's not like they can enter the Diadem without some sort of party.
If you don't want people to do their own thing, form your own party
The main problem (as stated) is that they can roll on loot despite not contributing to the combat aspect... at all. It's not like other party members get a share of the materials you've gathered as a DoL.To be fair, the other person really has no obligation to help out. I just hit 60. Am I mistaken that I need to be item level 179 before even being allowed into Diadem? If I join a premade to I bypass the item level requirement? Would this be the fastest way to move upwards in the game at this point?
Sounds like the entire mode is ripe for leechers? Won't this theoretically get worse?

Being in a premade doesn't bypass the item level requirement, but it allows you to go in with non-standard party comps.I just hit 60. Supposedly gatherers can dig up treasure chests that the party can loot on. You're just less likely to see one since you'll have more people fighting than gathering. Gatherers are contributing to adding loot as well. It's just a matter of whether you will actually get one or not.

When reading the arguments from people who defend or attempt to justify things like leeching, or other rude/ignorant behavior in these games, I'm reminded of the joke: "How do you know if someone's a Vegetarian? Don't worry, they'll tell you".
It's also kind of like the Streisand Effect.
You can always tell which people likely engage in the debated behavior themselves, by how eagerly and adamantly they defend it.
Reminds me of the pages long debates I'd see about botting or gold-buying in other games. The people who engaged in those things always made themselves obvious by how strongly they defended the behavior, and/or attempted to silence any criticism of it.

The gathered items should be rolled on as well to make things fair. Gatherers can roll on gear that fighters worked for, so battlers should be able to roll on anything gatherers dig up. Loot rules for mats could be Greed Only or Loot Master depending on the setting.
However I wouldn't call someone a leech when they didn't afk. They were doing an activity which was intended to be done in the instance. SE needs to have a look at the loot rules, that's all.
