In XI and the first year of ARR you could get old event rewards during the event. That's all people are asking for. It's really not a huge deal. SE can make money from these items without hurting ANYONE.

Why shouldn't they?

Once again, more money for SE = GOOD.
More money for SE without hurting anyone = GREAT.
