A restrictive system would benefit that person, not hurt them. You said they already have a bunch of alts - they just need to choose a different spec for each alt. I'll bet they have all desynth classes to 110, but on different characters.

Restricting one person from being able to do everything just benefits the people with more time on their hands because alts exist.

If such a system is implemented, I'd cancel my 3rd retainer and instead put that money toward a sub that lets me have 8 characters per server instead of 1. I'd then level at least one alt to use as a mule and to spec in things my main doesn't spec in. I just don't want to have to do this because FFXIV was pitched to me as a game where you don't need to level more than one character, so I'm annoyed at such a restriction being added at such a late date. Desynth was different because most items you want to desynth are untradeable anyway - if multiple crafting specs have to work together on endgame level 60 crafts, the items they make can't be untradeable.

This is kind of why I'm sick of them using time investment as the only gate. I like the idea of choosing between being jack of all trades, master of none and being a specialist in a few with strengths and weaknesses associated with each path except for the part where people with too much time on their hands being unaffected by any restriction and continuing to control the market.

I'd be happy to see something as simple as Specializations being the equivalent of Jobs where you only get to cross class with 2 DoH classes which would require unique rotations and strategies between specializations. It'd make crafting less homogeneous.
