The best you can probably do is call your ISP support, and work with their higher tier tech support to prove where the problem is using tracert data. We have to convince the ISPs that they should do something about it so that they can put pressure on the backbone providers. I'd say the rage over lag is 100% justified, but let's point the rage train in the right direction at least.

Sadly, this is indeed a terrible situation that is very hard to do anything about. It's stuff like this that should make people very worried about Comcast buying up TWC, and should have us VERY interested in net neutrality.

Or, SE could contact backbone providers, seeing as SE is their customer... Again, not the end user.

People aren't reporting with the right information to solve the problem. Definitely not enough of them at least. You've got people like this:

Who would just call in and say "DUHHHH LAG! WTFLOLOLOL" "Ok, can you describe the-" "LAAAAAAGGGGFIXITFIXITFIXIT". Or they wouldn't call in at all. Because they're lazy, and dialing numbers and talking to people is hard.

Actually SE is not a customer of the backbone providers... they (like us) are customers of the last mile providers. Those last mile providers (our ISP's) have the enforceable agreements with those NSP's. You pay your ISP to manage your route... you have an enforceable agreement with them that compels them to investigate/address issues within their network or to lean on or otherwise change their NSP (in the US, the major providers are required by regulations to maintain agreements with no less then 3 NSP's for widescale transit/peer exchange).

If they will not address your concerns that you have clearly detailed for them (ie, provided tracert data and such), then you have the option of filing a complaint with either your localized regulatory authority or a higher authority if available (like the FCC). Contact details should be provided in your bill. For South Carolina, that is an office in the state's capitol. For TWCSC, the address and phone number is on the back of the stub you send in with payment.

Thank you for the tip, this will probably be my next step.

I actually contacted SE yesterday to make them aware of the issue, and the service rep said he would use the link to my forum post in his report. He said there have been a few reports, but I know this affects more. People just aren't doing the necessary work of reporting/researching and going "lolVPN, fuck it" and moving along.

Go public. I'm making posts everywhere, FFXIV subreddit, Verizon subreddit, on these forums, Facebook, Twitter, Verizon forums, everything. I'm calling in every day. If Verizon isn't your ISP, you should still do the same. It's not hard at all. Get the information out there that these corporations aren't taking responsibility for something we pay a lot of money for every month.

Pressure should come from both sides. Do you really think SE isn't giving them some heat? The companies won't do anything unless they are getting pushed from the ISP And SE.

Exactly! Without our Tracert data they don't have anything more than "people are complaining." We, the players, need to provide all our data in our complaints so that SE has ammunition to take to the table. "Here is prove from x players that node y is the definitive problem." That's how you get things done people. Not by making an angry forum post with zero useful information.

If you guys care about the game then do what it actually takes to help. Raging for the sake of raging will accomplish nothing.

But I suppose you wouldn't know how business and customer service work.
You really think SE doesn't understand exactly this and is doing everything they can already? Really? You really fail to understand how little leverage they have over these companies.

Seriously google netflix's issues with Verizon and Comcast from the last year and look at how much it took for them to fix their problems. Verizon and Comcast are two companies that are blatantly holding back connections to extort money from their customers. This is extremely well publicized. This is just another symptom of the exact same problem.
