The problem with having a separate PvP server is it'll create the problem of separating people who are friends with non PvP players. Frontlines got a ton of flack because it was restricted to GC only and only friends within the same GC could fight together. Creating a server purely for PvP would mean either you do a world transfer just to play PvP and leave your friends and groups behind, or you make a separate character (if you have any slots left based on your subscription plan) and start at level 1 all over again. I don't think it would go over too well.

Another issue is how do you deal with level and gear level differences between players for open PvP? Is it all free game (even if one player is level 10 and another is level 50)? Can you only attack people within a certain range level? Will the player be gated behind something until they clear it so they can PvP?

Simply put, you deal with it by embracing the sandbox experience. You make friends or pay people to act as body guards, you pay players tolls for crossing an area. You learn how to move through areas and be sneaky. You learn to watch your back, you learn who you can trust and who you can't. That's how sandboxes work and GM's won't help you in these situations. Open PVP and sandboxes ain't for everyone for the reasons. Some love it, some hate it and no one is forcing anyone to take part in it. For those that want it, its 100% acceptable.

This is a RP/PVE community all the way with a few pvpers because lets face it there isnt many new MMOs out worth playing. It wouldn't need to be large or impactful simply another option in game. With that being said, the Open World zone would probably be dead most of the time except for the people who actually want to fight...so just don't go into it? It's not like this game places value and exploring or moving about the world without teleporting. So I lean more towards the PVP server suggestion. So when its put like that, just dont tele into the open pvp world or make a character on the pvp server.

Anyway, we are in need of content I support all content could care less what type of content. As long as its thought out and gives some form of reward. MMORPG = Choice of play style and right now we don't have enough.

Now, this was after Burning Crusade had launched, and so high-level old-world zones like that were mostly abandoned. Not abandoned enough, however. I got ganked, and then, when I ran back to my corpse and revived, I got ganked again. By the same guy. Third time, I ran back, but rather than reviving immediately, I looked around a bit, and found the guy waiting for me to revive. Not knowing how to turn off PVP at the time, I wound up corpse-running all the way to a safe zone, because this prick apparently never got tired of ganking a newbie long past the point all his gear had broken.

And that is also why I don't want to see Open World PVP in FFXIV. As it is, I already hate the concept of ANY PVP in FFXIV, but at least it's completely closed-off and seperate from the rest of the game, and I don't have to even acknowledge its existence, as it will NEVER affect me.

So, yeah, sorry, but by my experience, anyone who WANTS Open-World PVP is no better than another griefer who just wants to see regular players such as myself littering the ground while they teabag the corpses.

Ever since that occasion, I refused to touch anything even vaguely related to PVP with a 10-foot-pole, no matter how cool the reward looked, no matter how much the developers or the game promised it'd be 'all in good fun'. Because I knew that griefing jerkwads like that would be around, no matter how 'friendly' the game claimed to be.
Wah wah wah. I'd corpse camp you so hard on my rogue it would force you to log off.

Yeah, that's the thing to say to get the point across about how harmless open world PvP would be. Nice choice of words.

I suggested an arena type setting say no larger then the wolfs den is that is a free for all zone.

I do enjoy ganking people for hours in other mmos but. Can't handle the heat say out of the pvp servers.

I fail to understand this mentality. There is no such thing as a "PvE MMO" anymore. All MMOs offer PvE and PvP; FFXIV is no exception. Claiming that FFXIV is a "PvE MMO" is calling it half a game.

This is one of the more absurd rants I've seen in a long time...

I can fully get behind the notion of not turning an non E-sports game into one, but suggesting that a game should have ZERO competitive elements because of E-sports? Ridiculous.

Having competitive elements does not turn a game into a would-be E-sport. If they added Grand Company rankings based on a servers contribution in Frontlines, that would not make it an E-sport, it would just add an extra element to the event which has more lasting power than grinding for achievements. Heck, even if you make a MMO that is purely PvE, it still ends up with competitive elements purely because the players want it; What is a world first if not players competing to down PvE content first? Players will compete because competing is human nature. Developers shouldn't be shunning such a concept, they should embrace it because it is much easier to cater to than churning out new raids every patch.

Honestly, anyone who cannot see the difference between competitive elements and E-sports is a moron. All competitive elements do is add sandbox-like content which keeps players playing, instead of leaving players waiting for the next content patch.

free for all pvp zone are not competitive... it's not quite different than the hunt, it's will be at the largest group that will destroy the other one.
we don't talk of the ganking or stuff like this.

open world pvp Zone is a no go in a game mainly aimed to pve. even yoshida had said it will never happend, because he know that this game is first a pve game! you have tons of game out that have a better and bigger pvp component than here.

and no the pvp in the game is far to be balanced!
