I think it's a fair review. I agree the score could have been higher if it had been reviewed after the next patch, but even if 1.18 were the godsend patch is definitely NOT going to be, the game will still be 6/10 material.

FFXIV is a poor game, and that's it. One patch is not going to make it a good game, it needs a lot more work. A year from now it might be a good game, but at the glacial pace the patches are coming, it will probably take even longer. A year after release patches are still mostly fixing basic functionality issues that should've been fixed within the first few months.

Patch 1.18 is only the beginning. It's not going to suddenly make the game a winner.

"Oh wow, the game now has autoattack and some scenic landmarks. ten out of ten!"

Reviewing after patch 1.18 isn't going to make much difference. Newcomers to the game are still thrown to the wind and little to nothing has changed in the way of a useable UI.

Just wait until they do a re-review when and if FFXIV is ever actually good.

I mean sure would it have killed them to wait three days? But it's not like it would have made much difference anyway so who cares, get over it.

Gifthorse is prolly one of the heavily close minded people who believe the only UI is the EQ style mouse clicking kind. Personally I hate having to click on everything with a mouse, it's obnoxious, but i think if they were gonna go with a Controller UI they should have done console release first.

because at rank 5 you fight NMs, right? Or do class quests right? Or maybe fight with a whole plethora of attainable skills instead of just a few right? Even the story quest changes a lot at level 25.

People, chill out. It's a review, it's done and over with, and at least this author said they'd re-review it again this year. Pretty sure everyone going there and calling the author names, instigating arguments, and just generally trolling is not going to get this game a more favorable review.

We all can agree that the timing was shoddy. However that score is better than most scores and the game has NOT significantly improved since launch besides the UI lag and other minor additions. It's largely the same game. Reviewers can't keep holding out for these "miracle" patches which is always the "next" patch according to XIV players. If 1.18 fails to meet expectations, everyone's going to claim 1.19 will be the patch that changes everything. It's been this way since beta and the community has been wrong every single time. Try to see that from an unbiased point of view.

Actually the game has improved quite a lot since release. Of course irrational haters won't admit it, but they won't admit it now like they won't admit it with patch 2.0.

By now you should have noticed that gifthorse has a rather elastic idea of absolute terms like "unsable" or "unplayable", because like the reviewer in question he is completely unable to get a point across without hyperbole. Which of course voids nearly every point he has.

Though, gifthorse is excusable, given the fact that he doesn't fancy himself a writer, the reviewer is not.
