I try to remember what it was like when I was also in their position and looking for help in clearing stuff, but it does get frustrating after a while. You can only take wiping to something you know you personally can clear without a problem (Titan HM Heart phase anyone?) so many times before it becomes a joke. I won't be the first person to be leaving, but I probably won't argue with the guy who left first as long as they were also doing their job properly.
That being said, I do like to help. Sometimes I'm just not in the mood for it. Everyone goes through bits of that every now and then, I think.
It's not really up to random people to help others. If you want help, join an FC/LS. That is really what those communities are for.
We can also turn the question of the OP around.
Why don't the struggling people get skilled? They can't expect people to hold their hand through everything.
One thing is to help them, give them tips, literally guiding them the whole fight, and another one is they not listening, being boneheads, not following strategy given to them. DX Seriously, last night I wasted 4 hours helping several tanks on ifrit extreme, giving pointers, and yet they not following them, 4 hours, no kills. .-.
That's because helping out has it's gratifications and consequences. You'll end up with 2 types of people in the long run.
People that don't want to gimp themselves by teaching and helping others.
People that want to help but are afraid of what they might create.
Sometimes I regret helping those that struggle because of the elitism that's created from it.
I never hesitated to tell black mages that don't know the proper rotation. Why that rotation is a primary rotation and the key functions to that rotation. I've been doing this since beta and slowly but surely expanding and progressing on my rotation.
The side effect and consequence was I had black mages that argued about how I did my rotation and why this or that was better but I explained to them and eventually when they reached my gear wise they slowly came into its acceptance. Yet some still add their own twist to it and I'm okay with it.
Though I've seen raiding black mages however just see black mages do poorly get angry that they don't do a proper rotation and replace them.
I never once hesitated to tell black mages the secrets to double and triple flare. The triple flare method has affected me since it has affected the market board prices yet I don't see it as such a bad thing.
The side effect and consequence have been very noticeable here. In BCoB turn 4 and especially Brayflox I've noticed many BLMs neglected other jobs because of they want that average 6min 30sec brayflox runs. Every time I've pug a BLM for brayflox or I've joined them in some other dungeons where it can be optionally used and I don't see them perform the triple flare I tell them if they can meet those criterias or at least optimally do a proper double flare. I don't need parsers to do this. It's not hard to see if the astral III buff is up and flare is an easy animation to spot.
Yet I don't hear raiding black mages outside of my group even give the time of day to even explain this. In fact all I hear is derogatory remarks like "omg triple flare such damage much wow". Yet I'm not surprised when those people are neglected their brayflox speed runs because they don't have a bard or blm and have to do it on their tank/healer.
I have not told people a little something else about black mages because it so simple that people will just prefer to overlook it so I've kept it to myself and only shared with the people I know. Yet even with them they tried to argue.
Yet overall those that learn the significance of those rotation you'll never know what they can into until after they know it and can do better than what they are used to. Overall I've seen a steady increase of overzealous and elitism from black mages in my server. Was I the cause? I don't know but I hope not. Not saying I'm the only black mage that knows this but I have spread it more than enough to see those people I've told about it see their change in either being helpful or being elitists.
I hate myself when I BLM see people I help turn into elitist.
I'll just say that there are people who are beyond help. It was gonna type a very long descriptive post several attempts now, but I found that a waste of time for me. Even then, you still need 6 others competent people that are on the same page.
It's difficult.
The game is full of kids and not very bright people that equate gear = skill.
People will ignore players that demonstrate good skills and listen to idiots with higher iLevel gear. Some people will ignore advice and repeat the same mistake over and over again, refusing to learn from mistakes.
There are so many points of frustration for a rational person in trying to deal with other players, that even if you are dealing with one person that is having trouble that listens and improves... you might have others in the same group that don't listen... or spam chat with stupidity.
Personally, I would rather leave a group than subject someone to the insults of an idiot while I try to help them. It's not worth it. I'll discretely apologize to the person, tell them they are doing great and that they don't have to listen to a loud mouth brat being babysat by a video game, and let's leave together and talk about the encounter in tells.
As far as selling carries go, its the simple mentality that if someone really doesn't want to do something, they'll pay for ways around it. At my last job, I had daily quotas on how many calls I had to take, as well as how much revenue I had to bring in. If a customer wanted to move his website, I would give him all the resources and guides needed to accomplish the task. The task itself is simple. If he didn't want to learn how to do the task, I couldn't afford to sit there and attempt to walk him through it. Simply too time consuming when I could be meeting my other quotas I need to keep my job. However, you could pay for a service where for $75, we'd do it.
The entire process would take 5-10 minutes because I know how to do it already. Charge the money, I'm closer to my goal, you get your website moved, and everyone is happy. I learned the hard way that 45 minutes trying to walk someone through it when it may take another person 15 is too much of a gamble. If there is a guarantee, people will pay whatever for it. Is this price tag a bit severe? Yeah, well.....its strictly for profit in this case, but hey.
That said, I like to help people when time allows, but every run isn't a charity; if I want to kill x Primal or dungeon, I want people that know what they're doing.
I think videos are a fantastic resource. Just like with information being readily available on the internet that countless people don't take advantage of, I will make use of it. I can watch a video, have expectations on what will happen, and have a smooth run where it is less stress free for me and for the other party. If you want to make a learning party and jump in from scratch, either make that party, or stay in up-to-date content. You may not understand EVERYTHING from watching the fight (Turn 4 timing on adds for the off-tank, for example), but by the time you wipe, you'll probably have convinced the party that you are capable of clearing.
Should skilled players help more? Absolutely. I always try to help out new people; there's a debate I'm currently engaged in with another thread where whether or not a player should offer pointers where they can be applied, or whether it should just be limited to requests, but you also have to realize we all have other stuff we wanna do, too.
I can't get people together to clear Turn 5. It sucks, but it is what it is.
As far as advice goes, it seems that most people playing this game have been told "don't tell me what to do," or some other negative remark so often that they don't even bother. I think that you should always try to help and grow thicker skin after realizing not everyone will accept you, but the person I'm debating with ain't having it.
