After having played XIV as long as I have, I'd have to say that in order for it gain complex, strategic battles, Auto-Attack is needed.
There's no stopping auto-attack now, but if we're lucky they'll let us toggle it off, because I prefer hitting 1 repeatedly to staring dumbly at my screen like I did so often in XI; and I've found many times a tactical advantage to being able to cease attack in a split second; like if a mob that had been getting bashed on suddenly needs to sleep, I can stop instantly and not wake it up, or if we need to stop and let the tank regain hate, or when a mushroom is gonna poison me if I smack it.
ALSO THINK OF ARCHERS!!! They have a move that stuns as long as they don't hit it again, so they have time to back off and prep... Archers will not get this chance. Chances are they'll stun it then immediately unstun it; which will render this move utterly worthless.
Auto-attack is for lazy people.
I did that. Melee jobs were duuuuullll... You just sit there staring at the screen and hit one or two buttons only once in a while for WSs or buffs. Mages were better 'cause I could always be casting something, but melee was so 'do nothing' I could practically use the battle time to go read or play a second game simultaneously.
yes u can play ffxi blindly and that is what they are bringing back, least in start of ffxi people acually used chains and bursts so it was still fun, by the end of ffxi it was just a brainless zerg. no attention was needed to play it and that is what they are bringing back to this game with switching battle systems and now adding auto attack. ffxi was fun and great but to give us the same thing again is just weak.
Honestly I couldn't care what kind of system they implemented if it meant getting rid of the stamina bar.
Need restrictions on spells and abilities to stop people from spamming non stop? Stamina bar is not a solution. A real solution is cool downs. Shared cool downs between certain spells and abilities, longer cool downs and recast times, longer cast times etc.
Since it has been determined that the stamina bar is being removed, it also creates a few issues with the current system.
Haste and slow as of the current system affects how fast or slow the stamina bar regens. If the bar was removed how would those effects play a role? What would stop a heavy swing spamming marauder from hitting just as fast as a light stabbing gladiator? Obvious answer is auto attack and the developers deemed it so.

i lol'd, stamina makes more sense than a cooldown.
it wasnt about restrictions on spam, it was about choosing what skill to use wisely, cooldowns in no way simulates that.Honestly I couldn't care what kind of system they implemented if it meant getting rid of the stamina bar.

SE didn't switch to auto-attack just for kicks or to dumb the game down
in large part it to lessen the load on bandwidth and lag
with auto-attack every regular attack is on a timer server side
but with the old/current system you are having to send that attack to the server
the current/old system also has multiple attack types, so the formula is constantly different if you're using various attacks
this also helps player on the communication side of things, no more trying to type while missing attacks
no more loss of dps while you sit in a BR stack waiting for everyone to get in
and the best part for players, less combat lag (which you really notice in full parties in populated areas)
