First, sorry for the wall of text. ^^;
When we first got to try the new crafting system in ARR, I thought, "Wow! This is great!"
The system involves more skill than luck and if I have a good rotation and pay attention to what's happening with the synthesis, I can regularly HQ something.
But in my opinion the problems with the crafting system are now:
- It's actually TOO easy to HQ something even from NQ ingredients.
- Therefore NQ items are often worthless unless they are just throw away pieces.
- There isn't much worth crafting in the first place because:
... - All your mid-level gear is handed to you through quests.
... - Endgame pieces are overpriced in terms of tomestones, and questionable on whether or not they're worth it compared to Darklight and Allagan pieces.
v1 crafting was more heavily influenced by RNG, and it could be frustrating for sure. I had to bite my lip and stifle a scream at times. But I can't tell you how happy I was when I HQ'ed my Felt Robe and Felt Hat when those recipes first became available.
And seeing someone with 3, 4, or OMG 5! materia on an item was awesome. In v1 I never got more than 3 materia on anything because I was too scared to blow it up and lose the item after that. I looked at people with quad or quintuple melds in awe.
And even before that when we had +1, +2, and +3 items... +3 was really special and something you could treasure.
I know I sound like I have major gear envy now, but I don't think that's the case...
There was just a lot more to strive for in v1 around crafting and items in general, and I simply miss that desire to want to progress and get better.
Now everyone has Darklight, AF2, Relic +1, or HQ everything with 4 or 5 materia on it... and they are standing around town saying "I'm bored" just 2 months after release.
Side rant
It is just too ridiculously easy to get a crafting class up to level 50 in ARR.
While it took weeks or months to go to level 50 in v1 (and would give you a decent sense of satisfaction when you hit level cap), it now takes a day or so or running back and forth between the levequest NPC, market boards and hand-in NPC.
Yesterday I just capped Armorer, which was my last crafting class to level. I went from level 34 to level 50 in just 1 day plus got the level 50 quest tool -- and that was even spending the time to make everything myself rather than simply buying it off the market boards.
(for the record, I leveled 6 out of 8 to max or very close to max during v1 and never botted any of it)
The whole time while I was near the hand-in NPC crafting what I needed, a bunch of people were running back and forth to turn in leves and going up in level like crazy. Before I would actually congratulate strangers when they hit level 50... now it's just kind of depressing.
Overall, I think crafting has been completely devalued in ARR.
