    This is why I don't get into RP. I play the game as my character, but my character is an extension of my real life self. RPers bug me with all their unwritten rules and regulations. My name is close to being lore-specific, but it isn't quite, and I don't really care if anyone has a problem with that.

    I especially like that no one has a problem with there being far, far more nuhns than tias among the male Seekers. Yeah, okay guys.

    Anyway, the biggest thing about 1.0 that I miss is the realistic movement physics. Only a fraction of it remains in ARR.

    I also miss battle regimens. I thought they were a fantastic progression in gameplay from FFXI's skillchains.

    I know this is continuing to go off topic, but this is why I started a casual RP Linkshell on Hyperion (yes, shameful plug). The only names we don't really care for are the ones just meant to be puns or jokes, and even then if they want in it's not like we'll turn them away.

    There are no "RP sessions" unless members want to set them up themselves, and we don't ask for submitted back stories, longwinded blog entries, or anything like that. Just a bunch of folks that want to talk to each other in-character, the way RP should be.

    Well to continue the little divergence..

    I've yet to meet anyone got nasty about naming conventions or the like o.o On FFXIV anyway. I've never known such a laid back roleplay community as Balmung's. .. Everwatch aside >.>; Nobody's ever made me feel bad for lacking a formally written backstory or regular blog entries or the like, and my character profiles have never been more than something I made for my own enjoyment.

    Why not come up with a reason for the non-racial-standard character names and the like? Forra here I RP'd from the start as being foreign, hyuran-raised and thus named peculiarly. It's fed his character all sorts of development o.o

    Certainly though in the end, it's your character, and people who bother you about how you've designed them should really be dealt with as you would anyone else who makes claims about the game you don't agree with (IE: AF+1 for Castum only!): do not play with them if you can't find a happy medium, and if necessary, make use of your blacklist. Roleplay may be about fostering a healthy, fun community and there will always be a trade-off to not having as many sources for it if you choose not to with someone, but still, our characters are the products of our creative efforts. That at least grants us each the right to choose who we play with and how we play (and obviously respect that right for others).

This somewhat preachy post brought to you by my silly urge to avert the impression that the more community-development-oriented roleplayers of the game are by majority either elitist or.. whatever the word I'm looking for is. I mean okay I get uncomfortable when the netspeak creeps in but.. well, as above!

    A simple "This is my alias, not my real name" will suffice.

    On topic, I miss:
    1. War's overpowered Steel Cyclone...
    2. Ability to buy any number of items from a stack on a retainer
    3. The vast zones (even if they are repetitive)
    4. The green and pastoral Coerthas
    5. Brutal path to get a relic weapon.
    6. Nael's battle.
    7. The challenge that was crafting.

    Can you explain what you miss from 1.0 crafting? I love crafting and I did plenty of it in 1.0, but I can't see how what we have now is anything but a huge improvement. (Well, the economy/power of crafting items might be worse in some ways, but the actual crafting SYSTEM is only 100% improved imo)

    2.0 crafting is still not a simple task, there's so many skills to choose from and effective ways to go about it. It's a complicated and challenging system. But unlike 1.0's crafting, we have so much more control and transparency with crafting. Things are less frustrating to make and HQ, and overall the system seems a lot more fun to me now.

    I miss how crafting was the primary way to gear out your job with dungeon gear being a small improvement over it just for min/maxing.
    You could hunt NMs for a material that was used to make some cool gear, and then put whatever materia you wanted (without limitations) on that gear so you could create a unique look for "your character" thus allowing everyone to look different and instantly recognizable from a distance.

    It also made 1.0 the only true economy driven MMO out there at the time.


    I also miss how some gear would improve a specific ability for class/jobs that could use it.

    By extension: Does anyone remember the passive abilities you could equip with "ability points" to increase the effectiveness of your class?
    I remember one ability (can't remember the name) that Pugilist got as a passive that would increase the healing potency of any restorative abilities.
    When CON/WHMs discovered they could equip this passive and get a sick critical healing bonus to cure, it was a game changer for 1.0.

    *EDIT*

    I realize with the addition of vanity slots to the game, we'll have the same basic effect on our characters (depending on what restrictions they put in place), but 1.0 fell into a sort of "happy accident" with how the armor system initially worked with it. Initially, that system caused problems and a great deal of headache, but as patches were released I believe the community came to appreciate what we had until that gear was turned into "dated" gear with the onset of the last few patches for the first release of the game.

    I've lost the will to keep playing 2.0 for a while so I decided to watch some videos I recorded of 1.0-1.23 (about 42TB altogether...) and start adding things that I notice, lol.

    First off, I miss unique and fun ways to play the game without having every class/job put into a cookie cutter roll.

    For example, I had forgotten that Conjurer could tank the majority of 1.0's content, hold hate, and solo heal all at the same time (depending on if the DDs could dodge or not) all while keeping careful management of their MP thanks to Thaumaturge sub abilities and their own MP stances.

    It made for a lot of laughable times towards the end of version 1.23. =D

    I miss how each class had a "sweet spot" they could stand at for different effects (think of those RPGs that let you set some of your characters in the back line to take less damage or give them a boost to healing, etc.).

    Example: Lancer or Dragoon could stand at max distance from an AOE spamming monster and be out of range but still hit all of it's attacks.

    Ah, Rain weather with "good" thunder and lightning visual effects and realistic sound.

    Nothing like 2.0's version where it makes the screen go completely white for a split second and then a measly... is there even a sound for it now? I certainly can't hear any. =(
