Nah i meant that Gaius didn't believe Nael when Nael told him about Bahamut ( did Nael tell Gaius about Bahamut? )Ah, well. Maybe SE doesn't want us to know whether the Primal was sighted before or after the Battle of Silvertear Skies... I've got a handful of quotes like this. They're consistent within 5 years, but inconsistent in terms of anything shorter. That's a whole Umbral Era's worth of time!
Door's back open on Shiva and Ramuh. I've still got 10 gil on Odin.
An interesting take on the story to be sure, but this part implies that Gaius schemed with Nael to do the thing he tried to talk him out of. That's the big part I disagree with. Baelsar thought Dalamud was bad news when he thought it was just a rock. No one in the Empire was prepared for Bahamut, as far as we know, except possibly Cid - who was witness to the Citadel incident. Then again, we saw Cid in the End of an Era cinematic and he looked pretty surprised.
Regardless of what was going on, though, I do feel confident that Gaius probably did not say, "My plan to fall from the Emperor's favor and be ridiculed for ten years as I serve a questionably sane Elezen while he does my job of conquering Eorzea has finally come to fruition!" which would have admittedly been pretty funny in his Judge Vader voice.
As you can tell by this thread, we know a lot about a little, and none of that lot is the little that matters. It could be anything. As I've said, my money is on Odin. He's an Elder Primal that seeks to do battle with worthy foes - there's only one other Elder Primal around here. But who knows. For all we know Odin is a guardian deity of the Allag meant to balance Bahamut and keep him locked in his Labyrinth ... which would explain why he aimlessly wandered the Shroud for aeons while the Wyrmking was playing Pluto, I guess.
I do think the Empire is doing unholy experiments with primals however...
But that is another topic... for another time...
So i should have said Gaius had 2 plans, one for if Bahamut didn't appear and one for if he did appear.

Gaius only knew van Darnus wanted to carry on with the "Meteor Project," ala have it come crashing down on Eorzea. Turns out Dalamud (the target of the project) was a prison for Bahamut. Nael van Darnus definitely changed as he began to get closer to his goal. We don't know if even Van Darnus knew what was inside Dalamud, but he was definitely influenced by either Bahamut or the aether-aura of Dalamud (which was probably Bahamut's doing).
Gaius van Baelsar may have assumed that Dalamud was more than just a moon, but I doubt he ultimately knew it was Bahamut. And since he wears a mask, we can't really tell if he was shocked to see Bahamut as he watched from his airship. But he was definitely curious..surprised he didn't take advantage of the chaos to ensure the destruction of most of the Eorzean Alliance, most Legatus surely would have.

If I had just spent the last 10 years of my life playing second fiddle to Nael after single-handedly capturing the first Eorzean city-state... and I was watching his entire plan unravel in terms of its raw value to the Imperial agenda (especially if this included the appearance of one-if-not-two Elder Primals)... I, too, would just sit back and enjoy for a minute. I'd have earned it. Gaius had to be feeling like redemption was at hand; he predicted this would be bad for the war effort... and he'll be back on top soon enough. Remember his last words...
"Leave me something worth conquering."
"I shall refrain from making any further wild claims until such time as I have evidence."

I think no one knew that Dalamud was more then a moon. I think Gaius knew that it would kill everything on eorzea and he could not let that happen. The reason he did not is because gaius strike me as a type of person who want to win with his own idea and plans not take advantage of something other person did. maybe he thought would make him look weak.
Also like Anonymoose said "Leave me something worth conquering." Gaius want to control eorzea while Darnus he had no patience. Maybe that was due to Bahamut controlling him in some way to make sure he get free or some other reason,.
