That doesn't work so well when you're a company dealing with paying customers. It's called losing customer trust. Which is exactly what Square Enix should avoid like the plague, given its recent history.

"deal with it" is what some said when FFXIV was released in its abysmal state. "deal with it" is not exactly the right approach when talking about this kind of things, as it gives companies leave to do whatever the hell they want, no matter what they promise or pubblicize, which is obviously bad business.

Losing customer trust doesn't necessarily mean the customers will immediately ragequit, but it does add up, and Square Enix already has a rather extensive history of taking the hammer to their customer's trust in their decision making ability. The sensitive course of action would be to just stop doing that.

Edit: Can't you just be happy for once that Alpha went smoothly, and that the game is on it's way to success? ( I think I'm asking to much on this one)

Loosing what trust? He said months ago he wanted people who was not playing the game to join, get that through your head. They are taking feed back so what happened with 1.0 wont happen with 2.0 cause you did not get in the alpha, they have plenty of feed back from tons of players.

As a matter of fact. I have no idea if the Alpha went smoothly. Working on blind faith proved a bad choice once already.

When a company tells X to its paying customers and then does Y which happens to be the opposite of X, a percentage of those customers will lose a certain amount of trust in that company. It's a very simple and straightforward marketing rule.

What Yoshida may or may not have said in some obscure interview somewhere doesn't really matter, as the paying customer isn't held to the responsibility or reading every single interview he gives or every forum post he makes. On the other hand, all of those that applied are to read the clauses of the application, which makes it the only applicable rule.
