So where did you hear 4 - 6 from?I swear, people on these forums make it seem like "simple" things are rocket science and create absurd ideas and pose them as "logical". To be frank, this is what is happening (in TLDR form):
1. Our Data was saved.
2. Servers are purchased/rented in different Regions
3. 2.0 data is being placed on them
4. Using Server Population servers are named (i.e. Aegis goes to Japan due to high JP population, Ragnarok goes to EU)
5. At game launch we connect onto a login server, re-create character and choose an "existing server"
6. I go to _____ because the high NA population (meaning it is in the US)
7. Enjoy 2.0 on the region/server of choice
I'd eliminate "cost" factors as much as possible as they are going to do nearly whatever it takes to make this not suck due to damaged image.
It makes sense to call it a data center when each world actually consists of multiple servers, which they do.It also doesn't make sense to call it a Data Center if it really is just a Regional Server. Why make the differentciation. Is this really just a matter of semantics? I get Data Centers house "servers" as in hardware. But when you talk about Worlds they are also housed on A server. (hardware) because that's why one can have a problem and not others. So I again ask why call it a Data Center and not Regional Servers because I'm sorry the arguements made say there really is no difference.
Honestly; they just need to buff the auto-translate utility.
I can't fathom or process that some people don't appreciate such an incredible tool.
Here's a quotation from an MMO blogger that I've always agreed with:
"FFXI also benefits from one aspect that has yet to be duplicated by any other triple A title. All countries play on the same servers. There is no separation by region like every other MMO. You may think this would be a double edged sword, however FFXI includes an auto-translate function for key phrases and components allowing people from all over the world to group and raid together. All told, FFXI is a game that THRIVES on community as one of its biggest selling points."

Now just replace every instance of 'FFXI' with 'FFXIV', and that's largely how I feel based on preference.
My other great fear is that due to the nature of my service and profession; I will no longer be able to rely on the EU/JP to be active and online when I have liberty or time-off in early morning/late nights. I won't be able to create an eastern hemisphere portion to my LS. I won't be able to interact with or appreciate the customs and differences of the world community. Hand-in-hand with the auto-translate feature.. I thought this aspect of world unity was an extremely enchanting and important aspect to the FF:Online series.
It seems the gears are already in motion though; hopefully everyone can gain and retain equally.
No where but there is a reason behind census polls and it logistically speaking the easiest approach to avoid more data movements is to locate the regional server by the population base. I mean would you put Ragnorak in Japan which was labeled a European server? Doubtful.
If they decide to rename them all entirely they can throw the naming schematics out of the equation and to be honest it doesn't matter what they are named and where they are placed. Just from a database standpoint I'd want most my servers with Japanese majority servers to likely be in Japan, not America.
