And not the fact that DX is a piece of s**t, that it's not stable in the way linux is, that upgrades and updates will eventually cost you, that error reporting is less detailed in Windows, that it's actually LESS performant than Linux, and that they're trying to push a tablet OS with the newest version.

Yeah. It's because it's popular and I'm trying to be indie.
I don't use Linux right now because of issues with my laptop's switchable graphics making gaming completely impossible (do not buy HP laptops) but I have used it and if I could play games and had the amount of software compaibility as windows I would use linux as my sole OS.

I do agree with everything here, the only time linux has crashed on me is when I cause it, no BSOD, no lockups, large OS updates twice a year. fast security patches and huge customization possibilities.

Linux trumps windows in all areas except software compatibility and switchable graphics.

Windows is only the most popular OS because laptops ship with it, no other reason, and the reason it has better software compatibility is because it is more popular (again going back to the fact it is factory installed)

The reason OSX isn't as popular as windows as well is because Macs are so expensive compared to PCs.

I'm so glad that Valve is working on bringing Steam to Linux, because they've actually contracted several AMD and nVidia engineers and worked with them to create updated, cutting edge drivers for their chipsets. What they're doing right now is going to fundamentally change the gaming market for PCs.

That's a shame, because software compatibility isn't a 'small problem'; it's actually quite a huge problem, with all of the software, games, and other things out there that ARE NOT useable on Linux. Software compatibility is one of Linux's biggest problems, and until it's fixed, Linux will never be as huge as Windows. That's just fact.

Except that they already have the openGL code from the PS3 version... So the biggest part is done. And since SE is familiar with the PS3, it's familiar with openGL (unlike with DX it seems, see the alt-tab crashing issue), so they don't even have to train people in openGL.

Idk what you do to your windows, but mine is as stable as my linux.

Yeah, that's why I stick with win7. Maybe linux will win more support in the future, Valve porting steam is great news already.

Is OpenGL the entirety of the Linux OS? If so, then sure, pretty much any game from PS3 could make it to Linux (if what you say is true).. but, I'm pretty sure there's way more to deal with than just OpenGL.

And even then, the only way I see SE porting this to Linux is far, far down the road after the game has been out for awhile and they've possibly profited from it. However, with the miniscule amount of Linux users against the overwhelming majority of the world using Windows, I don't ever see the game being ported. One person's demands for it won't make that happen.

    Anecdotal.

Windows as an OS will come to a halt when there are issues with software, core dumps and blue screen are still a thing, updates always require restarts, etc. Linux is built from the ground up to not require reboots and to be extremely stable in case of software crashes.

About the only things that can damage Linux to the pont where the OS needs to restart is kernel upgrades and fork bombs (if don't know how to prepare for those).

These are less of an issue for home users, but they're still a thing and I heavily dislike Windows for the way it manages crashes.

Even though, I'm pretty happy with XP and 7. (I've used Macs, and Linux variation(s) as well).

Same. I've used Windows all my life but I've tried Linux and Mac - wasn't a fan of either. Also, I have close to zero problems with my Win 7 after minimal updates and halting the rest. After that, I control which services run on startup and all that stuff to keep my Windows running smoothly and quickly. The only time I've had a real problem with Win7, EVER, was a trojan on my laptop last year. But it was an easy fix, lol.

Linux needs proper software compatibility and support before it can ever become as mainstream and widely-used as Windows is. Simple fact.

"Now linux, or line-ex, I dunno how you say it.. or how you install it, or use it, or play it...
Or where you download it, or what programs run.. but Linux, or line-ex, don't look like much fun.

However you say it, it's getting great press, though how it survives is anyone's guess..
If you ask me? It's a great big mess.. for elitest, nerdy shmucks.

'It's free!' they say, if you can get it to run.. the geeks say 'Hey, that's half the fun!'
Yeah well I got a girlfriend and things to get done... the Linux OS sucks.
Sorry to say it, but it does."
