From what it sounds like, the article rein linked to suggests that they would be closing down the servers for 1.0 before beginning alpha testing. Implying that the tests wouldn't start at all until the servers were brought down. so delaying the server down date would only delay the testing even more.
That seems to contradict previous information we've received, though. so hopefully the article just printed inaccurate information.
From what Yoshida said during the 25th anniversary event it sounded like alpha testing should have already started or should be starting at the end of september.
(the video said "end of this month" but the video actually went live near the end of August.)
It was my understanding, even before the 25th anniversary event that they would begin alpha testing, then when they progressed to Beta testing the servers would come down, they'd begin the character transfers and hopefully by the time that was finished the game would be leaving beta and be ready to launch.
But one of the joys of this game has consistently been the inaccuracies and ambiguities of all the news originating in a foreign language and needing to be translated.
