People who lost interest already left the game a long time ago.
People who are new or just got back just to see this game as it nearing its end will logs back in no matter what. Even if they just log for the first month and then leave again.

In other words, downtime and the interest at this point is no longer related.

This is old news. We learned back at E3 that the servers would be going down for several months. It's unfortunate, but necessary.

I'm sure they'll do things to keep the community engaged during the downtime.

I would figure they'd be frustrated with this as well. Not all of them are super hardcore players.

I'm not so focused on the season or the date just as long as they get the job done. I think ARR will be great from most of the information that has be released even though I might not agree with everything . I have trust in the team. Just keep us informed, give us the daily or weekly info to keep us checking in and take a hard look at what your testers are saying.

From what it sounds like, the article rein linked to suggests that they would be closing down the servers for 1.0 before beginning alpha testing. Implying that the tests wouldn't start at all until the servers were brought down. so delaying the server down date would only delay the testing even more.

That seems to contradict previous information we've received, though. so hopefully the article just printed inaccurate information.

From what Yoshida said during the 25th anniversary event it sounded like alpha testing should have already started or should be starting at the end of september.

(the video said "end of this month" but the video actually went live near the end of August.)

It was my understanding, even before the 25th anniversary event that they would begin alpha testing, then when they progressed to Beta testing the servers would come down, they'd begin the character transfers and hopefully by the time that was finished the game would be leaving beta and be ready to launch.

But one of the joys of this game has consistently been the inaccuracies and ambiguities of all the news originating in a foreign language and needing to be translated.

When XI and XIV got knocked offline due to the natural disaster that struck Japan people didn't lose interest or not come back. Some people will lose interest sure, but that's common with anything.
