Even with the PS3's "limitations" they keep thinking of new ways to improve the general performance of the console, proof of that is in the evolution of games for the console as in games that were released when the console came out versus the games we have now, compare any of the old games with the new ones and you will see a pretty big difference, the PS2 didn't have any update system like the PS3 has so I'm hoping there will be future updates to the FFXIV that will make it look better even if it's only 720p.

Some of the breakthroughs I've noticed where games like Metal Gear Solid 4, all the Uncharted games (compare U1 with U3 there's a big difference right there),the Crysis games, the Bioshock games, the Dead Space games, etc., every iteration has come with a substantial graphic boost and to the way the developers take advantage of the console, which means there's some juice left in it for FFXIV and games to come; have you seen the Resident Evil 6 demo that came out 1 or 2 days ago? I wouldn't have believed games/graphics like that were possible when the PS3 came out, but then again this is only IMHO ;D

John Carmack said something when idSoftware released Rage for PS3 and PC, he said that is easier (at least for him) to make a game for a console because is the same hardware worldwide and you don't have to worry about the game running in different resolutions or monitors or to make it run in low end hardware (the reason why Rage had some trouble working correctly in PCs), so in a way this will save some developing time since they just have to find a way of optimizing any new content they come up with for the console and then add the extra level of detail (or lack of it) that the PCs out there need.
