This next XI expansion will still see PS2 support in Japan only? Didn't know that. Not really, it's still supported in Japan, also the PS3 is much more powerful than the PS2. The PS2 was extremely weak processing wise and memory wise, the PS3 is not. There will obviously be some limitations but nothing that will limit the game, you have to remember it took them 4 years before the PS2 started to hurt FFXI.
You have to figure XIV will survive even that long for the PS3 to become a problem.
And sure, PS3 is obviously way stronger than PS2. I wasn't trying to talk in the now rather than what will come down the road, a long ways down it most likely.
Holy crap that looks awful..
I'm completely serious. That is the crappiest looking PS3 game I have ever seen. I would rather they scrap PS3 than show keep showing that to the public.
The Characters look like they were made in paint..
I have to agree with this. I know i'll probably make a few enemies saying this but I personally would prefer the game be pc exclusive. It's not like it's that wild of an idea really, GW2, WoW, ToR generally ever mmo is for pc only. Having played XI for some 8 years I saw first hand what happens when you go cross platform on an mmo.
Though a lot of the issues with XI were crazyness of armor and size of enemies/area's which isn't much of a problem for the ps3 as it can scale things pretty damn well. I guess over all what SE can do is always release like High Res texture packs and DX11 support for pc. There's many cosmetic things you can do to a graphics engine that won't effect gameplay in the least.
Yep only NA/EU support was being dropped. Like I said you mainly have to assume XIV would survive long enough for the PS3 to become a problem and by then they'll likely find workarounds like they did for XI and the PS2 (Mog Sack and porter mog for example.)
Even with the PS3's "limitations" they keep thinking of new ways to improve the general performance of the console, proof of that is in the evolution of games for the console as in games that were released when the console came out versus the games we have now, compare any of the old games with the new ones and you will see a pretty big difference, the PS2 didn't have any update system like the PS3 has so I'm hoping there will be future updates to the FFXIV that will make it look better even if it's only 720p.
Some of the breakthroughs I've noticed where games like Metal Gear Solid 4, all the Uncharted games (compare U1 with U3 there's a big difference right there),the Crysis games, the Bioshock games, the Dead Space games, etc., every iteration has come with a substantial graphic boost and to the way the developers take advantage of the console, which means there's some juice left in it for FFXIV and games to come; have you seen the Resident Evil 6 demo that came out 1 or 2 days ago? I wouldn't have believed games/graphics like that were possible when the PS3 came out, but then again this is only IMHO ;D
John Carmack said something when idSoftware released Rage for PS3 and PC, he said that is easier (at least for him) to make a game for a console because is the same hardware worldwide and you don't have to worry about the game running in different resolutions or monitors or to make it run in low end hardware (the reason why Rage had some trouble working correctly in PCs), so in a way this will save some developing time since they just have to find a way of optimizing any new content they come up with for the console and then add the extra level of detail (or lack of it) that the PCs out there need.

The ps3 is capable of many great things but always keep in mind there's many variables that come into play with an mmo versus a single player game. It's why you don't see many mmo's with graphics on par with say Uncharted 3 or what have you. That's not to say FF14 looks bad. A single player game has things that are scripted, you know what the game world will do, it's the player that's the variable, so it's not that big of a deal when you're only dealing with one giant variable. With an MMO you've got upwards to 100+ players in a single area reacting with the game world around them, that's a lot of variables to contend with.Even with the PS3's "limitations" they keep thinking of new ways to improve the general performance of the console, proof of that is in the evolution of games for the console as in games that were release when the console came out versus the games we have now, compare any of the old games with the new ones and you will see a pretty big difference, the PS2 didn't have any update system like the PS3 has so I'm hoping there will be future updates to the game that will make it look better even if it's only 720p.

Well first, specific games on PS3 IMO has surpassed the graphics on FFXIV already especially the PS3 version. I think it's more of the art style. Don't get me wrong FFXiV is gorgeous but it will be outdone in the near future by other games. I very much enjoy the art style of this game as long as its not so bland which with 2.0 should change that.
Edit: person above me pretty much said what I wanted to![]()
