Honestly I'll take a "downgraded" run animation in exchange for all of the vast, sweeping changes that appear to be making the game far more playable. Not even a concern for me, easily a non-issue.
I just hope they remove the damned animation lock we BLM/WHM get when trying to stop a cast and run away so we dont get trapped in AoE range or on top of cracks -_-, every Blm can atest to falling dead from that during Ifrit and I hope the new data centers help with the horrible ping time. I know I have a 1~1.5 sec lag from the Ifrit doing cracks to when I see it underneath me. for F@#$ sakes I see the Moogles on mini map 2 sec's before the appear on screen sometimes even longer
I don't think its much of a downgrade if any at all, I know the its useless for me to see how the area darkens after the person next to me casts a spell, I can see the spell going off no need to see the whole area affected by it. One thing I don't see on the pre-alpha is all of the glow effects that are in the game currently, it looks more "realistic" would be the word I guess

it was said that he was running this at its lowest setting on some crappy laptop just to show how great it still looked at the lowest settingsIn the video shown at Gamescom 2012 (that one can easily also find on Youtube), you can clearly see that the animation of the characters is seriously severed.
2 of the main aspects of the running animation are completely gone.
1. The leaning left or right of the characters as they're strafing / changing direction is gone.
2. The animation of the characters as they stop running (that extra step to define the stop) is also completely gone. The characters just stop moving their legs, and that's it.
Please don't tell me that 2 of the most important things that made the animation in FFXIV so good compared to other mmo's are gone for the sake of jumping.

Really? Another grass-like thread...
It's Alpha.
Your face comes off as fanatic. I think nitpicking pre-alpha footage is pointless.I agree with OP. The animations where a stellar part of the game and it would be a shame to let them go.
Also, you guys really need to stop brushing off genuine concern on the games development as 'trolling' or 'non-issues'. It's way too defensive to Square, and can come off as fanatic.
I taste like disappointment, with a slight hint of bitter reality.

Oh definitely. If detailed character attention tracking remains, especially if they really do keep their promise to re-implement target-oriented emotes, then I'll certainly be consoled even if I am pushing for keeping the present levels of detail in the larger-scale animations as well.I have a feeling I know the reason behind these complaints. Seeing your character move very slightly with realistic weight gives you the feeling of not just controlling something alive, but of being that character.
Therefore, I propose that the loss of the realistic movements, if it happens, would be a big one, but would be less of an issue than the loss of our current "target enemy and your head turns to look at them with the eyes following them independent of the head" mechanic.
Just that one thing is what I've finally nailed down as being the biggest thing that differentiates this game from GW2 (along with how the camera is placed). It makes you feel like you're truly there, and adds a level of empathy to the character that very few other games have managed to do.
Anyway, just my opinion. Continue on.
On the other hand if that were removed as well.. urgh >.>; It's not a concern to readily dismiss, either. We got that because it happened to be a design feature of Crystal Tools, so...

And it'll probably be gone in 2.0 final product.
All these "Pre-alpha" "best game ever" "2.0 can cure cancer" dweebs are too thick to notice but 2.0 in terms of character movement, animation and inertia is a huge downgrade.
Akin to Guild Wars 1 and 2 Movement and resembling the quality of a korean MMO (You're always in strafe mode.
Example: You click right, your legs turn right while your body is still facing forward and your character runs in the same direction at full speed. Which is pants on head retarded.)
