Unsuccessful gathers give half exp of a successful one, so if you are leveling and hit gathering fategue you will level half as fast, also the fategue we did have was influanced by exp, if it was the same fategue you would not beable to get the masses of exp from gathering leves, this is based on how much you gather in one day, not exp based.
