This is probably one of the biggest reasons I'm unsubbing, as a "midcore" player.
A little background: I used to be an avid GW2 player, but I left because the game has a BIG issue with introducing new mechanics and content and then forgetting they exist. Just imagine: we have no new dungeons and raids since they were first introduced.
People keep saying how FFXIV had this thing that made old content always stay relevant and you had reasons to run it, and honestly I was a big fan of Soken's music, so I decided to hop on during the Endwalker pandemic thing. And then I discovered what I've been told for years was really stretching it.
We have an ungodly amount of content in between dungeons, trials, raids, ARs, exploratory maps, etc. But most of them have been reduced to walking simulators because of the power creep and lack of polish, and even though they give us a reason to do them through Wondrous Tails, people would rather unsync and do them as fast as possible. In fact, it seems most people would rather not participate at all. This is the first time I play an MMO where players would rather not play the game
Worse still, Yoshida expects us to play through all that content yet they haven't done the minimal effort to keep it up to date. Super fun to spend an hour hyping up Titan and losing time making a banquet for some douches to tell us the weak spot is the big shiny thing, just for the powerful primal to die when you sneeze at his direction.

I'm not sure where I sit on that one. I tried the raids and got to m3, but I never started it. The fights took too long. I didn't find them really challenging, but the length of it drove me insane. Someone would cause a wipe, and you have to start it over, and it just feels from the perspective of time to kill they have too much hp, or the dps in my group sucked. Either way, it was miserable to do.As someone who enjoy midcore content more than high end raiding,
I was always having fun in previos expansion for these reasons:
1- excited for new jobs and changes to current changes.
2- extreme, unreal and bozja content.
3- story.
first one is just at worst state
second one we still waiting for unreal and bozja-like content
third one is idk exist
I hate Bozja. Something about it is elitist, and I just hate that kind of content. Same with Extremes. Never tried unreals, but Extremes were enough to nope me out. It's not even like the content is hard. It just breeds this hyper optimized sort that needs to desperately go outside and touch some grass.
But lately, I've been just kinda afking into roulettes bored out of my mind.
I might jump over to Wow. I heard the story for the War Within isn't bad, and it's something to do. I'm not looking forward to the new Bozja unless it's more casual and friendly and less elitist, but I doubt that is going to happen. I might quit until the end of the expansion and pick up where I left off.

I wouldn't be surprised if WoW new story is better than DTI'm not sure where I sit on that one. I tried the raids and got to m3, but I never started it. The fights took too long. I couldn't imagine that one day we will get mediocre story from best Japanese gaming studio and specially FFXIV
To be fair, I never felt it was extraordinarily good. Shadowbringers was good. Parts of Heavensward were good, but I've never thought it was like the pinnacle of storytelling. However, Dawntrail is just bad. It falls into Dora at some points. Like I get, most people are dumb, but I feel like I am being talked down to. Like I don't get it.
But I don't expect much. Gonna go smash things on my Warrior get overwhelmed by Wow's multitude of systems and end up playing something else. Maybe 14. I don't know. It's been 11 years. The game has been stale for me for years, but it's home in that sense.

My characters are gone. Years of joy seeing them when I log in is gone. They have been replaced with strangers I don't recognize. It's been two months and they still look like strangers. I break down crying when I have to look at their new faces for an extended amount of time. These are the vessels through which I interact with the game world and whose stories I've love to weave over years of writing and artwork. Without them, there may as well be no Final Fantasy XIV to me.
That alone makes it difficult to continue to log in and play. And then I played through Dawntrail.
Nothing could have prepared me for how truly wretched this story is. I preordered and bought the collectors edition of Dawntrail, thinking, "they haven't let me down yet over four expansions, why would they now?
I'm obligated to finish the raid tier with my static, and after that, I'm leaving. Until they SERIOUSLY address the problems with character models and show some actual evidence of fixing the faces and making amends for this insult of an MSQ, I'm done. This is literal why I'm also unsubscribing. The character graphics made my miqo'te not be him anymore. I had to cope with it for 2 months and I still don't like him, even more in cutscenes he looks just bad. I hate his eyes so much now... I was just doing Summoner's job quest and Y'mithra's eyes looks alive and vivid and perfect and my miqo'te meanwhile has the most deep eyes I've seen in a videogame after this "upgrade". I can't play with this, it's the only thing that makes me stay in the game, If they don't fix it I will just watch streamers and youtubers play the next expansions because I will not continue since I also didn't enjoy DT msq at all.I’m considering not renewing once my game time runs out in a month. It will depend on what they do with the character graphics. I’m waiting for the public statement they’ve promised on it in the character graphics thread. They said they’ve delayed to properly translate it.
For me though, I’m so demotivated that the appearance of my Miqo’te changed. I would look past everything else and keep playing happily if my character returned to looking the way I loved. I don’t want to lose the house I finally won recently, but if I unsub depends completely on how they handle the character appearance feedback. I hope they take it seriously. I think they took too lightly peoples attachment to the appearance of their characters of up to 10 years.
I mean... It is. It does exactly what it sets out to do. It does it well. It is a WoW story through and through, the way WoW players want and like it to be. Great characters are back and they have the spotlight. Xal'atath is an amazing antagonist that doesn't just appear out of nowhere, in fact what makes it/her so great is that she and the void were constantly there, somewhere in the background doing their incomprehensible terrifying things. The "new" races/cultures present are actually DIFFERENT and interesting to learn about, you feel like you are truly in their world.
Compare it to Dawntrail, where the scions are just missing, the characters we're supposed to care for either suck or get no screen time. The antagonists are complete nonsense, and are all declared as the antagonists a few quests before you get to murder them. The cultures that were supposedly the selling point are just recolors of old beast tribes except even more stupid somehow. And of course the entire "vacation! adventure! rivalry!" components are just outright missing.
War Within is miles better than Dawntrail. I realize many people on ffxiv forums are not quite ready to hear that, but it's the truth. I'd even argue that Dragonflight was better than Dawntrail, as that was WoW's "reset" expansion with "low stakes" and "adventure" that SURPRISE, you actually DID get. You actually felt like a damn adventurer in a new land, exploring cool shit, not worrying about the good old faction war. And the game was modernized too, something ffxiv will just never get apparently.
From what I've seen The War Within is having issues of it's own right now.
I ping pong between this game and WoW usually but I personally haven't had any desire to pick up War Within yet.
If anything I'll get to the end of Dawntrail's story, do a couple raids and unsub and see how people feel about The War Within in a couple months when the honeymoon phase is over.
Who knows? Maybe Post Patch content will be really good like YoshiP promised during the interview?
*huffs Copium*
If it sucks I'll prob drop MMOs in general for a bit and play another game. (FF16 PC Port and Space Marine 2)
Well, I got a 6-month sub, so I'm staying for a while longer.
But I barely play the game anymore. There is just nothing to do beside old content that I've done ad nauseam already.
I don't raid, so I have even less reason to justify a sub.
I hope that something fun happens in 7.1 or 7.15; otherwise, I'm out.
