I'm trans myself and I think the whole argument of "such and such character MUST be played by someone who's EXACTLY like them in real life" is so stupid.

Especially for Japanese media, where one of their most recognizable, strong male anime heroes is played by a literal grandma

Oof. Not only is she asking for someone to step down from their livelihood for no good reason at all, but someone could easily use the same argument against her: "Wuk isn't trans, so Sena should step down from the role clearly meant for a cis woman."

It's the classic "Rules for thee, not for me".

This is exactly why I argue tying race or gender to VA work is dangerous. Not only will it tie authors to what VAs they can get and thus curtailing their writing options, it hurts VAs too.

Wuk isn't Hispanic or Latin. She's Turali, and a six-foot-six bipedal cat. Guess we better find one of those cats that sounds almost human to voice her, sorry Sena. Gotta stop voicing Goku at all, we don't have superpowered monkey men from outer space available. What's that? We don't have enough Ninjas available? No more Boruto!

Okay that last one's a good thing but point stands.

If we go the route of demanding performers adhere that closely to characters, it'll eviscerate the industry. If we argue that it applies to 'real life' situations only, then guess what, none of these settings even take place on earth!

But hey, if Sena wants to be consistent, I look forward to genetically engineered monster girls for corporate interests. I hope they're available to consumers by 2030, I want a maid with tail fluff I can huff.

The VA and Wuk both suck. It just happened to go hand in hand. Remember, not even the good japanese and german voice actors could salvage Wuk. At least if he was good, he would not have a chip on his shoulder. We all know what this is about. No need for anymore discussion on the obvious.

there are many male anime characters voiced by women. nothing special, nothing new.

and also: take whoever is best for the job, sex, gender, colour, quotas and whatever doesnt matter. thats for both sides. hiring a transwoman just to have a transwoman is not progressiv, its just sexist. (is it sexist even though its about gender and not sex?)

Yeah, wouldn't want that. xD! Especially considering that part of being a good VA is having a wide range of voices to play multiple characters like Nolan North.
