Asking for the old models is not the same thing as asking for the old graphics.
We were told we'd be getting the same appearances – or as close to it as they could keep – and instead we have been given many seemingly arbitrary changes.
Am I, indeed?
I've put countless hours into this game and my specific characters. Posting glamours on Eorzea Collection has been one of my biggest hobbies for some time.
I'll finish MSQ with the girl who is at best almost-but-not-quite Aurelie, and at worst a puffy-faced stranger with a bored resting face and uncanny smile – it varies with the angle and lighting but sadly is more frequently the latter.
Then I'll play a bit with the alts that pre-"upgrade" I was hoping to take into Dawntrail next, and see if they feel anything more like themselves once in motion, because they don't feel it at all so far. U'zolwe (face 4 Miqo'te) has lost his sharp and alert look that defined his character to me; Haru (face 3 Au Ra) has gone the opposite way and his soft-for-an-Au Ra face has become harsher and cruel-looking. Most of my other characters have had similar changes of mood, and it saps my enthusiasm to play even the few remaining.
As it stands, I have no desire to play them any more – no desire to play with glamours, no desire to take new screenshots and place these impostors alongside the originals as the same character.
Unless the faces are either reverted to their original shapes or new faces added so old and new are separate options, my characters are gone right now, and I don't think I can get them back.
So the people who wouldn't notice the change, also won't notice or care if it changes again.
And no, the models are not close enough to pass as the same characters. Some can, others are a long way off.
I am fairly sure this is intended to be the same expression, for example:
The new face isn't just "not the same", it's simply not even a pleasant face to look at half the time. The art style probably never would have hooked me if the faces looked like this when I started the game.
A surprising amount of joy came from just seeing my character in cutscenes and how pretty she looked. Now she just looks puffy and strangely modelled – the eyes have big fleshy rims in the outer corners and the space between nose and mouth has a bizarre pinched-inwards shape as if she's puckering her lips at all times. There is no setting that will get rid of this.
I'll finish Dawntrail, I'll play through the Arcadion story, but I have no desire to spend any more time with this changeling than I have to.
