League of Legends had a similar instance in 2016 where they re-released a limited skin. Their solution was to add a crown to the original to indicate/reward players who obtained it on its first release (2012).



I'd be happy if the original mounts had a sticker/ribbon or some small effect somewhere to indicate that they were the original

I mean they did this with wolf collar weapons, just a bit too late. PvP players suggested that since Feast Season2 and we got it in Crystal Conflict.
