Old crafting was more annoying rather than challenging. Failing multiple hasty touches, even with steady hand was not a difficulty you could overcome with skill since it was just pure rng.
All you could do to fight against this was trying to go crazy on the materia melds, which were, and still are, heavy rng ob the success rate.
I sure as hell don‘t miss redoing high level crafts multiple times (with reclaim back then) just get decent hasty touch, or good condition + tricks of the trade rng to complete something.
