Decrease the demand for houses with taxes

You are already paying a sub to actually keep it (since you have to visit it once every month or so from getting it demolished), so it's kinda a chore already.
Taxation would draw from the funds of your retainer you employ there until nothing is left, instead.

The sub is for access to play the game, not to keep a house. If it was to keep a house, every player would have one.

Quite honestly, it's a very foolish consumer that pays a subscription just to keep a house in a game they don't want to be playing. That money could be getting used elsewhere, such as a game that has housing but no demolition. If the only attraction to the player is housing, they're better off elsewhere.
