A real summoner interacts with summoned pets. FF14 SMN is nothing but "Let´s throw around with some shiny animations or spam Ruin."
I mean... BLM casts a skill called "Fire", while SMN casts a skill called "Titan". That´s it...

Check out any ARPG, Astellia, hell even BDO´s Tamer... there are some sort of Summoners with pet-interaction, controlling and combos... but not in this game.
I guess it comes down to game-feel. I never liked the old SMNs and I played most of the other FFs. VI, VIII, IX, X etc. had summoners I can get behind. HW added Dreadwyrm Trance, right? Not 100% sure, but I remember hating that ability. All that happened was that a silly Bahamut head appeared and that's pretty much it. SMN only started to get appealing to me when they added an actual summon followed by Phoenix in ShB(?). Y'know, when they actually added summoning stuff. So I'm happy they got rid of the other things and replaced it with what makes the job more appealing, if that makes sense. Wouldn't mind more stuff to do, sure, but the feel and looks is something they nailed for me. So kudos for that.
