Not 100% sure, but I remember hating that ability. All that happened was that a silly Bahamut head appeared and that's pretty much it. SMN only started to get appealing to me when they added an actual summon followed by Phoenix in ShB(?). Y'know, when they actually added summoning stuff. So I'm happy they got rid of the other things and replaced it with what makes the job more appealing, if that makes sense. Wouldn't mind more stuff to do, sure, but the feel and looks is something they nailed for me. So kudos for that.
I get what you mean and i´m fine if ppl enjoy the new SMN as much as i´m with ppl who lost something, because the new SMN is an animation-festival, but not a gameplay one.

Anyway... such calls like "It´s a real summoner now!", "It´s a real FF14 summoner!" just add a lot of question-marks above my head. Has Squall been a summoner and not a gunbreaker? Does Cloud has been a summoner instead of a soldier? Or how about the rest, whoever used that materia to call a primal, GF, esper....
Current summoner works exactly that way. I can´t see anything to underline it to be a real summoner. It´s FFs way to summon something, but not a summoner.

Seriously, SE would´ve done better to get ride of the job or to rework it as the Dotmage. Give any class their own primal-use instead. Just for the fun of gameplay, for the feel of Final Fantasy. Maybe even give us the materia and we can choose. It doesn´t have to fit any rotation and might be only usable on the open world. Who cares... There are enough primals for any class or atleast different ones for roles. Could´ve been some kind of rework for the boring LB-system aswell.
