They weren’t really obsessed with perfection, they were fixated on making their world a better place. We’re told this both in game, shown it, and told via the short stories. They acknowledge their world isn’t perfect and this is further expanded upon in Pandaemonium. They were simply trying to make the best of what they had and live for the future which is literally the message they push time and time again in this game. This is even what the scions and the main cast strive for. It’s what numerous npc’s regard as well. Striving for the best in the future.
