There is, and always was, some form of Grind in MMORPGs. People who want 'stuff' with as little effort as possible will spend hours doing boring things for those rewards. They're invested in playing the game.

FATEs are a quick and easy way for solo players to get 'things' to pay for rewards, whether those things be GC seals or gemstones. Hunts are available for the more adventurous (whether solo or in parties), giving Allied Seals, Centurio Seals and Sacks of Nuts, each with their own sets of rewards. Daily roulettes award Tomestones.

Any and all of those grinds can become irksome, but an MMORPG without some time sink to grind against for rewards loses players.
