How bout this. You "purchase hardware for your IT department"? Give me an example of what IT hardware you have purchased, what source you used, and its application. (You don't need to give details on who you are or exactly what it's doing, just a quick brief. Security is important, and I wouldn't have you compromising it.) Over the last 2 years, I have personally purchased about $700000 in servers, firewalls, switches, workstations, and various components for those. Heck, before I took the position I have now, one of my last projects at my previous companies was a $350,000 network overhaul where I was in charge of design, procurement, programming, and installation. September marked my 20th year working IT professionally in the enterprise sector. I've been directly involved in the purchasing aspect of it for the last 7 years.

From your comments, to anyone who actually works this industry, it's obvious that you have no clue. When asked to show some form of credibility, you deflect and insult. I could write a book of examples that prove I know what I'm talking about. I've kept them brief because it's irrelevant at this point. Sure, they "can" but it would be an absolute waste of money and solve nothing as they would arrive far too late to be of any use to the problems at hand. I called BS on you procuring IT hardware because you have failed to backup that claim with ANYTHING that suggests you have the knowledge necessary to do so or ANYTHING that suggests you have ANY experience doing so with or without the necessary knowledge. Pro-Tip: Unless someone else is telling you specifically what to purchase, lacking knowledge of WHAT you're purchasing in regards to IT equipment is a bad thing. (Spoken from a myriad of experience watching people buy stuff they have no idea what they're buying.) Even if you have purchased low level IT equipment, scale matters. Low level equipment (workstations, small business servers, small business firewalls and switches) can be acquired direct from OEMs, and it's not a big deal. The enterprise sector, however, is where that world changes. It's all about the scale of the application. MMO servers are one of the biggest scales you can imagine in the gaming industry. OEMs don't usually even touch this level directly. If you were to call up HP and tell them you needed a shipment of servers to handle something that scale, they would refuse to sell it directly to you, and point you to a vendor partnership. They don't want the logistics headache involved in that. The ONLY exception you'll find for this is when the application is on the level of a super computer. These are typically handled directly by the OEM. (IBM loves their super computer builds.) You also don't typically just "order a server". You order the components and build the server. Even if the server is something simple like an HPE ProLiant or Dell EMC. You'll get the chassis, which will come with the motherboard, backplane, 0-1 CPUs, 0-1 DIMMs populated with RAM, and not usually anything else except rack rails. The rest of it comes as separate purchases, in separate packages, from separate stocks. Here's the crazy part... THE VENDORS SELL OUT.

Tell me something. Day 1 of early access, when this problem showed itself, what do you think would have been SE's acceptable approach?
