I do suspect there's something wonky going on with the "down to 1 and then kicked" situation. There's gotta be some bizarre miscommunication where the server recognizes you're up for getting logged in, and starts making the attempt and somehow can't find your character or something.

Realistically, there shouldn't be nearly so many cases of players genuinely sitting at literally the front of the line. If you see yourself down to first in line, you should immediately be suspecting something's gone wrong and the server can't sort it out.

Absolutely correct, has happened to both me and a friend (separate times and one day apart).

I actually tried logging in earlier (usually wait for the dead hours) and got it, too. But, rather than be frustrated about it, it's just got me curious. It's spread out enough that it's probably not an ISP issue. Maybe a chance of some packet bottleneck somewhere or whatever... but it's across regions/data centers, too... Or could just be the server knows you're supposed to be in the game but it's too overloaded and can't find your character data to actually put it in the game. Idk. Quite possibly even the devs are still working out exactly what's happening. It's strange, to be sure.

Ultimately, I'm not too fussed, tho, because I'm willing to accept the infrastructure is just struggling on all sides. This is a situation they've probably never encountered before because they've never had this many players trying to be active all at once. Best case, they figure out where the losses are happening and patch the leaks. Worst case we suffer until the load lightens and hardware upgrades down the line will resolve the issue.

In essence, this is a stress test. They've never known about these issues because they've simply never come up. Maybe they'll get fixed quickly. Maybe not. Maybe they can't. Whatever the case, this is demonstrating the limits on their system and where they need to make improvements. Just, those can't really happen immediately.
